Hi all,

One of a number of these threads, but my issue is more specifics. So I've been playing World of Xeen with the configuration set to use Soundblaster to play digitized speech and Roland Mt-32 to play music and sound effects, with the Munt emulator. It was working reasonably well, though there were frequent crashes. At my most recent crash, half of my recent sound effects have disappeared completely! I can still get combat sounds, but sound effects in exploration (spell sounds, footsteps, door opening, etc.) are just gone now! I've tried restarting the computer and verifying the files, but not luck. I can change the sound settings so I get sound effects, but then I lose the MUNT Mt-32 music, which is so much better than the alternatives. If anyone has any advice, would most appreciate it!

Update:

Apparently the issue was that you have to set Soundblaster to automatically adjust volume. Still pretty unstable though - has anyone been able to halt the crashing for Xeen while using Munt emulation?

Unfortunately, it seems as though the MT-32 music option causes problems with Xeen. If you look waaay back through this forum you'll find multiple topics about Xeen being unstable when MT-32 is being used. Personally, I find it's easiest to get it to crash when it plays the voice effects from entering and exiting vendor counters multiple times. (I've played with many DOSBox settings/builds to try and get it stable)

I'd recommend playing it with music set to "Roland Canvas/GS", as that gives great music and is completely stable. You can then use a good general MIDI soundfont (like fatboy) or S-YXG50 VSTi or Sound Canvas VA (If you have big bucks to spend).

Depending on the choice you make, you may run into the captital tone fallback bug (Xeen expects a SC-55 mk1 to be hooked up, other options don't always support this). To check if you have this bug, start up a game and shoot an arrow. You should hear a "twang" bow sound. Move forward to hear the footstep effect. Now shoot an arrow again, if you hear the footstep effect the bug is affecting you.

To fix, there's 2 choices I know of. Patch xeen.cc and intro.cc with the files from here (https://www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?p=305345#p305345) using an ips patcher like Lunar IPS. Or you can use Falcosoft Midi Player with LoopMIDI (and optionally Coolsoft Midi Mapper). Make sure that Falcosoft Midi Player has "use patch info for Capital Tone Fallback" enabled under "Instruments" (Also set the "Custom patch Names" correctly).
