Hello again fellow GoGers,
i am here with another conundrum, i recently started playing Might and Magic IV & V, which i downloaded from this site. I noticed that the Music sounded like a dying SEGA Genesis so to save my eardrums i searched around for some alternatives.

I saw that one Forum said to Change to Music/FX from Soundblaster Pro to Roland Canvas/GS that seemed to work out well the music was much more tolerable but when ever a party member missed an attack i heard this weird telephone ring sound.

Next i tried the Roland LAPC-1 / MT-32 and i every door i opened sounded like the Telephone noise i mentioned above, i took my search to Youtube where i heard wonderful sound effects as well as a catchy music. i tried to set my settings to what they had suggested but i got the same noises.

Is there anyone who can help me out with this i would appreciate it.

P.S i saw on another thread that if i configured the Dosbox settings MIDI from Intelligent to Windows that should help, but i can't seem to edit the dosbox that came with the game, i have attached a picture of the only configuration program i could find with the Downloaded bundle.

In order to edit your DOSBox setting, you should open the file called dosboxMM4-5.conf in your installation folder (use notepad or any text editor).

(You can change some of the DOSBox settings too through a shortcut called "DOSBox Configurator" created in the Programs Menu, but that only includes some of the settings; mostly graphics, not music.)

Following what i learned from that thread i went to http://www.dosbox.com/wiki/MIDI_software_devices and dowloaded BASSMIDI as well as the "General MIDI SoundFont"

After it was downloaded and installed i extracted the soundfonts and followed a tutorial on YouTube on how to get it working, after chagning the settings on the config file for the DoSbox and running the game i had no Sound-effects or music.

I would appreciate any advice or help someone can give.

P.S i found a YouTube Video saying that i can change the default Windows MIDI to VirtualMIDISynth by editing the Registry and replacing the default midimap.dll.

would that be a option to consider or is messing with the Registry too risky?

P.S.S Im beginning to think i should just stick with soundblaster it may sound terrible but i can get it working.

No. You don't have to and shouldn't edit the registry to use VirtualMIDISynth. I use it myself.

_Download it from this page, then install it.

_Download and install a soundfont (I use Fluid R3 myself). Details on these 2 steps can be found here:

_Set VirtualMIDISynth as your default device. Not through registry. You can do it in the program itself (see attachment) or you could do it during installation.
_Leave your DOSBox config as it was. mididevice=default.

Ok, so i have downloaded VirtualMidisynth and made the proper adjustments, as of now im still waiting for Fluid R3 to finish downloading.

Is there anything else i need to do after i install the sound fonts?

Just make sure they are actually enabled in VirtualMidiSynth (there is a check mark next to it on the first tab; seje attachment).

And in the second tab (MIDI mapper) CirtualMidiSynth set as default device.

Ok ZFR, i have done what you suggested but for some reason when i ran the game i didn't get any sound or sound effects.

the only thing i did was Uninstall BASSMIDI, i have attached pictures of my settings.

OK, First of all, you have to set VirtualMidiSynth as your default device. See attachment.

Now the bad news. I just intalled it and iut turns out World of Xeen doesn't use MIDI, so neither VirtualMidiSynth, nor BASSMIDI will help you with it. But, it wasn't really wasted time. Leave VirtualMidiSynth, it will help you with any other game that does use MIDI.

Now for Xeen.

The best Music is one of the two Roland Options.
For sound effects, try Sound Blaster Pro instead of Sound Blaster 16.

If it works and you get the "telephone ringing" sound, switch music off in settings (press Tab during game) and see if you still get it. If yes, then it has nothing to do with music and is caue by sound effects. Try setting sounds to just "Sound Blaster" or "Adlib" and see if it's better. Or when it asks you to automatically adjust volume during set up, try both Y and N to see if any is better.

Well, after a good time working with the things you guys have helped me with and the detailed help from ZFR, thank you again Sir, i think its time i slapped a bow on this puppy.

I can't seem to figure this out. i guess it would have been easier if i was on windows 7 not 10.

And if i had bothered to mention that i was on windows 10 it would have helped in the long run instead of wasting everyone's time.

Thank you All for the help. I'll just have to get used to Sound Blaster
