My game seems to freeze up whenever if I visit a lot of shops and try to exit it.
Sometimes the screen text messes up and slows down to 1 fps, crashing soon after.

At the bottom is my conf file.

I tried a few different things, like:

- lowering or increasing cycles
- disabling MIDI (I'm using a real MT-32)
- running in administrator mode
- increasing memsize to 32
- various rendering modes
- changing sound blocksize/prebuffer/rate

Disabling sound in-game seems to fix the issue. Music is fine.
That seems to suggest that my sound settings are wrong.. but I believe they're at default settings.

Any ideas?

EDIT: I'm on Windows 7 64bit.

Try changing the game settings (run the install.exe in the game folder) instead of the dosbox settings.

kmonster: Try changing the game settings (run the install.exe in the game folder) instead of the dosbox settings.
The game's sound settings is SB16, IRQ 7, DMA 1, which is the default. Since it's the default I see no reason to mess with it... especially when others don't seem to be having this issue.
EDIT: reading fail, sorry ><

I remember having had this exact same problem and also asking it here!

check out this (my) thread on the subject, the solution is within :))

If your solution was to use the supplied shortcuts to launch the game, yes that's what I do. IRQ is set to 7 on both game setting and conf file.

Pleniluneorg,
Did you ever solve this problem? I know this is a 7 year old post, but I'm having the EXACT same issues and can't seem to pinpoint the cause. If you happen to still be around on this forum, and you remember if/how you fixed it, let me know!

If you're having persistent problems, another option is to use ScummVM, which now supports World of Xeen. You can play the floppy version directly using it, or if you want to play the CD version, you just need to follow the notes in section 3.14 of the README.

I might give that a shot! I'm interested if those running Xeen using ScummVM have had any issues with using the Roland LAPC/MT-32 sound setting. I did some more troubleshooting and that is definitely the cause of my lockups/crashes. If I switch to the Soundblaster for music/FX, I don't have any problems. I'm starting to think there are some bugs in the sound programming itself, as the game is unstable even for those with the actual MT-32 hardware (such as the one who made this post). Sometimes the music will glitch out, like it's not being triggered or stopped correctly. Dosbox handles other games with the same sound settings with no problems... MM3 is a perfect example. I played the entire game using the same setup with no issues.

Ah. That's one significant downside of ScummVM's Xeen implementation.. currently it only implements the Adlib driver.

Yeah that would be a deal breaker for me unfortunately... I appreciate the suggestion though!
