I have never played the MM series before, but the GOG sale caused me to buy MM7. I feel like I must be missing something somewhere. I can have a tank (knight) in this game, but how do I get enemies to attack him? They whack on my wizard and cleric pretty much exclusively. (And when I say whack, I don't just mean melee attacks; all of their ranged attacks are on the weaker party members, too.)

I have a tank with high armor and hit points, so how do I use him? Is there some way to have the tank out front? I'm at a loss here...

In MM7 the creatures have class/race specific attacks, some prefer to attack a certain class like undead will attack only cleric or paladin until they go unconscious then their attacks get spread around, goblins attack dwarves preferentially, elves attack humans and vice versa, check out the creature list on Flamestrykes MM7 site for attack preferences...

So in short, there is no tanking, despite the presence of the archetype. Correct?

Pretty much, the knight not really there to absorb damage, rather deal it out, when he gets up in levels he really is a hard hitter, also he is good when used with regeneration and shared life, brings the other characters up to full health no problem...
Thanks. Restarting with TSSC, then. :)
I usually try to keep characters with same amount of "durability" so I try always to eanche hp of characters with low HP, and to enanche their armor the most (means that for the knight/paladine I will buy only a chain mail armor, while I give all other stuff like helms, gloves to other teammates.) That seems to work for know, I guess In future when the paladine will start having double HP respect to sorcerer
This is one of the things that initially bothered me about the games, but I actually like it. I like that it encourages you to make sure even your flimsy guys have survivability, instead of just relying on one meat shield and a bunch of casters with 1 Endurance.
