I have recently gone back to windows 7 and installed MM7 through the GOG client beta, and the in game music id LOUD. The music volume slider does nothing, and I always play with the music on minimum anyway as the game has a lot of good sound indicators telling you what is going on around you. I can't even hear the rest of the game with the music this loud, I have tried changing to 2d sound, enabling and disabling acceleration and nothing changed this. Searches in this forum and on yahoo only seem to produce results for MM7heroes and no sound issues for MM7. I do not use unnoficial patches and never had this problem before. I used to own this game on disc years ago and even then it didn't act this way.

I don't know of this problem. I only know that with the Grayface patch, supposedly music volume is controlled with the sound slider too (although I found this not to be the case).

But then again I only played with that patch and since I didn't have the problem, maybe try installing it. It has a few fixes for the game, maybe this is one of them.

Other than that, try installing/updating your sound drivers.
I used the grayface patch as well, at the very least the gog version loops the music where the grayface patch by default resets it to songs playing once.

I also found when I played the song on tutorial island at the start was really loud but the rest was fine

The original game does not loop music. That's a feature of the grayface patch.
no i meant the version on GOG loops the music, the grayface you can also loop music but it's off be default and also doesn't work lol
I do not like a lot of the changes Grayface's patch makes as some of the bugs it fixes actually nerf already underpowered characters that I like using. This and the fact that I do not believe it addresses this problem. I don't care if the music loops or not as I tend to turn it down to inaudible levels in the first place, but now even with re-installing the volume of music is way louder than it ever was to the point that nothing else is audible. The slider does nothing to it. I have re-installed the game and the audio drivers are fine.
In Greyface patch, the sound volume can be set by the ingame option, but it is slight:
Just after the 00% (no music) to the very left, the sound immediatly seem to reach like 50%, then 67% (the incremental pictures icon of the option are not true here), then it's linear up to the 100% to the very right.
It's not linear from 00 to 100%.
So, the first step of 50% can still be loud if your 100% is already very loud... But it is not a game problem, it is your pc sound settings (mine is goodly set, no problem with the music by the patch).

But, I have to reinstall all from GOG, as mine at first came from the old CD. I then asked to Galaxy to verify.
Maybe the music files of GOG are loud...

About the bug fixes, you often can remove them by the mm7.ini file.

I have a suggestion but I don't know how viable it is. I am using Windows 10 Pro but I think Widows 7 should be similar in terms of audio. I just ran a quick little test and here is what I found:

1. The in game scroll bar for music in itself is not very good. There is only a dramatic drop in music on the lower 3 bars. Bar 4 up to the maximum seem to just increase the music very slightly.

2. I minimized the game and opened the sound bar mixer on the control panel and set the audio specifically for MM7 to what I thought was just right for the music. (I understand this will effect the sound effects in the game as well so I left all of those options at Max in the game and set the Music bar to the second to lowest bar). This set the music at just the right volume but the sound effects still had much more sound than the music since they were maxed out.

Unfortunately, every time I minimize the game and then go back into it it ruins the screen and I have to exit and restart the game :( But, when I restart the game, all my in game music settings stayed the same and my volume mixer on the control panel kept it at the last setting I had for the game so if you could find just the right combination maybe that would fix the problem?

Hope this might help.

it's 2020 and the very same problem still persists... I wish the Gog guys were interested in fixing this. It takes 80% of the fun out of the game.
I'd rather no music at all - I want to hear myself think. But moving the music slider to zero turns off the sounds too, and I do want those. So I leave the music at minimum and "not looping", and whenever it starts I go into turn-based mode, or open inventory, or open a conversation - anything that suspends time while I wait for the music to play itself out.

This is not from GoG, so do not blame them, but my old retail CD - plus Grayface patch, without which I am unable to start the game at all, on my present PC (Windows 10 64-bit).

I guess there is only so much that can be done from outside the game - what we really need is a fix inside it, from NWC, who are long gone.

My solution is a bit overkill, what I have done is generated silence in mp3 with Audacity and copied the file into a folder named 2.mp3, 3.mp3 ... 20.mp3 and in the Music folder replaced with these files.
