I finally finished M&M6, and what an adventure that was. Started M&M7 and am quite enjoying it so far. I do have a few odd questions though. Some might be answered in a FAQ, but I'm trying to avoid any of those.

1. I've noticed throne rooms are locked and I can't talk to whoever is behind them. I thought it was just the castle in the Tularean Forest being locked for some reason. Then I tried going into Erathia's castle and noticed that throne room locked too. Not sure if it's something I did, a quest I need to finish or what.

2.I made it into the back tunnel into Castle Navan and everything was now hostile to me. Does this effect anything? I loaded a save before entering, just in case it would cause problems. That, and my morals I play by go against needless killing.

3. Do things dropped on the ground ever disappear? At the rate I'm going, my inventory will be full of quest items. I assume items on the ground stay there, but no idea how a map resetting would effect the items.

4. Is the overworld map a grid like in M&M6? At first I thought it was, but some things seem to say it's not like that in M&M7.

Aside from the obvious that the doors are locked at night (6 pm to 6 am if I recall correctly), these doors are locked immediately if any of the guards turn hostile, This seems to be your case judging from Q2.

Did you accidentally enter one of the restricted areas?
Turning the guards hostile has no ill effects, other than locking the throne room thus preventing any quests from being done.
It is only temporary though. After 6 months (?) everything is forgotten and forgiven.

Items left on ground do disappear even before the map resets (sometimes leaving the map and coming back is enough to have them vanish). Not sure about quest items.
Lost quest items might be gotten back through the Seer ("I Lost it"). It doesn't work for all though; only the essential ones.
Your best bet is to leave quest items in a chest in Castle Harmondale, next to the throne room.

Note that you generally do not need the quest item anymore once the quest is over. You can safely let them go. I'm a hoarder though...

Not exactly a grid, though the areas generally follow directions logic (if B is west of A, C is south of B, D is east of C then A is north of D)
Thanks, that answered my questions :)

Another thing, is stealing useful for anything? I never really looked at it because the morals I play by don't really allow stealing in games.

One last thing, there's no way to get music to loop? From my searching, I found no way to actually do it. I do love the music, so maybe I'll just download the soundtrack and listen to it out of the game.

Almost useless. You can solve 1 or 2 quests by stealing (e.g. the bard on emerald isle), but there is always a better way of doing them. And you'll never need the money to steal from commoners. Also, if it fails people turn hostile, so unless you use save-reload you run a risk of turning the area hostile until it resets.
Another question, other than luck of the RNG, is there any way to protect against death attacks? I want to clear out Avlee, but the ancient wyverns are being a pain. Is it just something I have to wait until I'm a higher level when I can resurrect?
Distance is the only solution that I know of (Strictly range attacks and when they get too close, run.)
Edit for spelling

Protection from Magic at GM level also protects from instant death attacks (1 skill level per instant death attack).

Original version didn't have music loop, but GOG version does have it.
Oh, I must have overlooked the Protection from magic grandmaster effect. That will be nice to have (no idea how long until I can get to GM).

Loving the game so far. Feels a bit different from MM6. Instead of large groups of enemies, it's mostly smaller ones that require more tactics to defeat.

Another question. Is there a downside to killing everyone in fort Riverstride for the plans?

None that I know of.

You need GM Protection From Magic to protect from Death and Eradication effects. Ancient Wyverns are melee only, so they can't insta-kill you if you stay at range. Enemies with ranged attacks that have this effect (ex. Blood Titans) can inflict the condition at range. You can use corners, plain dodging (if you aren't in turn based mode), or fly vertically (possible in turn based mode) to avoid incoming ranged attacks.

There is no penalty for killing everything in Riverstride, as long as you are strong enough to actually do so.
