Hi,

Is it possible for merchant skill to bring selling price above item value, or buying price below it? Or is it as low as they get? Anyone has the exact formula this skill uses?

Thanks,

After you've boosted your merchant skill to master, you'll get good prices but you can't simply buy-sell to bolster your wallet, afaik. Without spoiling too much, if you're after profit, enchanted items sell much higher then regular ones.
I'm not after money. Have around 1 million now. It's just curiosity on how this skill is calculated exactly.
I don't know the exact mechanics and I haven't seen a documentation anywhere yet. The calculations in MM are usually pretty robust, as the higher the values the smaller the benefit from additional points. Even boosting to astronomic values doesn't result in top effects, e.g. with enchanting. So my guess is you'll hit an approximative cap, that'll prevent exploiting the skill.
I believe that your Merchant merely skill serves to reduce the difference between the item's actual value and the shopkeeper's preferred price. That is, even with an arbitrarily high Merchant skill, you can't actually make a profit through simply buying and selling items.

The formulas are as following. Having merchant skill on its own gives you 7% discount and each point gives additional 3% (exprt gives 4% per point and Master - 5% per point). So in example, with Merchant skill 5 at expert you would have: 7+4*4=23% discount.

There are caps. You can's sell anything for higher than nominal price (listed in item's description on right-click), or buy it for lower than that. Each shop has its own price class (there are 5 different price classes - multipliers to nominal price of items). E.g., new Sorpigal has shops with 1st price class, which is lowest multiplier. It means that with low Merchant skill, if you are low on money, it is better to use Sorpigal's shops for all the business stuff (except general store, one which sells bottles and herbs and has sign with Barrels in front of it - you will get 50% penalty for selling anything there).

There is hard cap on merchant skill (as it also affects identify, repair and training costs) - it can't lower price more than 3 times. This cap is at 12 Master in Merchant skill.

Nice info, thanks! Do you have a link to a web-source for this?

If you want me to recommend good MM6-relate site, I'd name mm6world.ru - it is the best site with information on MM6-8 games I've ever seen. However, it is on Russian.
