Back again with another question. I have just got the enchant item spell. I tried it on several items, all failed. Any of you know the chances of the spell working or how to increase the odds? Also, must of my characters have items which have an added bonus such as fire swords or voltage bows, are these items excluded from the spell? The manual isn't clear on this.

Enchant Item will actually work on any item (though some items may not benefit from enchantments). Similarly, Uncurse Item will work on any item (though it doesn't do what you would expect), and Recharge Item will work on any item with at least 1 charge. The only spell that is restricted is Duplication, which will only work on items that can be obtained as random drops; that spell won't work on quest items, for example.

You need to have enough spell points to cast the spell; the cost is 50 *times* the current bonus of the item. So, for example, if you have something like a Fire Sword +10, you will need 500 spell points (+ 50 gems) to cast the spell. Yes, that is a lot of spell points, and it's enough that you might not be able to cast the spell even just after resting. Note that, in some other versions (notably the classic Mac version and the Sega Genesis version), the cost formula is different (plus instead of times), so don't go by videos of those versions.

With the help of fountains, you can easily enchant any item up to +5; getting an item higher requires resting, as there's no fountain that will give you more than 200 SP.

Here's something fun: Get a Max HP Potion (which normally raises Max HP by 512 when used). Now, cast Enchant Item on it; each cast will increase the amount of max HP it gives by an extra 256, so at +5, you get 1792 max HP per use. (You might consider casting Recharge Item to give the item more charges.) Now use the item a few times to get ridiculously high max HP totals. Unfortunately, these potions don't give you current HP, and the max HP will go away when you rest, which is a bit of a problem. (Actually restoring those HP is, for now at least, left as an exercise to the reader.)

(One warning: Don't enchant an item to +63; doing so can trigger bugs, like the item being treated as cursed. Uncurse Item won't remove such a curse; that spell is bugged, and will instead set the number of charges on the targeted item to 1. Then again, I have a feeling that item curses were not properly implemented in the first place.)

24jelmer: Great, thanks for the pointers!

Edit: wow your tips helped me defeat the dreaded cuisinart. Well, defeat, survive their frenzy! Thanks.
Now, if you're ready for a new challenge:

Start a new game, and kill those cuisinarts without winning any other battles first. Yes, I have actually done thins; it takes some knowledge of the game mechanics (much of which has been provided in this thread) and knowing where certain useful things are, but it is, indeed possible.

(Note that the game only supports one save file, so if you want to do this, you might want to back up your save first.)

Edit: Forgot one thing: The Enchant Item spell always works if you have enough SP and Gems to cast it.

Thanks for the very clear answer! I'll try the cuisinart thing once I finished the game :)
Hi again,

I'm currently trying to raise my stats at the circus. I did:

- get cupie dolls (I gave everyone one, just to be sure and one extra for the old man)
- give cupie doll to old man in D3
- Go to inner circle in e3
- Return to circus and gain stats raise

However, I don't see the stats being raised on my characters. What am I missing? Is this a bug?
From memory, after you visit the Inner Limits with the cupie doll, you need to play one of the circus games and that stat gets raised for all characters. It only works once, then you return to the Inner Limits with another cupie doll and repeat.

I did that, but stats do not get raised. No matter which I choose. To be fair, it worked once but only on three characters.

I think there is an upper limit which stats can't get increased by this method - 100 or 200 I believe. Were the chars that didn't get a stat increase over this limit?

The limit is 100, and unlike the other stat bonuses, you won't exceed this value if you are close; if the stat is 99, it will only increase one point.

Also, I believe that, unlike other stat boosts, these boosts change the current value as well as the base value, so they show up immediately.

Yes, but it doesn't happen. Stats do not get raised and no stat is even near 100. I guess I'm off to other stat raising points. Can't find anything on this on the internet except that it should work and the steps I've already taken.
I feel stupid, just needed to rest and it showed. So, solved.

So then maybe I'm wrong about it affecting the current stats. (Fighting a battle would have also resulted in the stat boost showing, at least for characters who don't individually run away from that fight.)

Just remember that a certain punishment for stealing won't show until you rest or after a battle, so if you suspect it's happened to you, rest and then check your stats *before* you save.

Ever since that comment about stealing, I have not taken a single thing from any castle lol.

The particular instance I've mentioned is actually not in a castle; it's in a cave. If you want, I could tell you exactly where this happens, but for now, I'll mention that the game will ask "Do you dare steal it?" when you reach the point. (Say "no", obviously, if you happen to find this spot.)

Great, thanks, I'll now know what to look for.
I want to thank all who have replied to my questions in this thread. I just finished the game! It was great fun, though I had more fun with MM1, but mostly because battles got tedious.

This thread is great for people who want to tackle the game as well!
