There is an option to transfer your characters from MM1 to MM2 but I can't figure out how with the whole dosbox thing. Anyone of you guys figured out a way to tranfer your characters? Id really appreaciate the help, thanks!

Hi,
I think it's like this:
Start MM2
Choose S to Start Game
Choose T to Transfer Characters
Then you have to type the path to the ROSTER.DTA file from MM1
If you installed to default location it should be:
C:\Program Files\Gog.com\Might & Magic VI Limited Edition\ Might & Magic 1 - Book 1\ROSTER.DTA
If you're on a 64 bit system replace 'Program Files' with 'Program Files (x86)'
Or you could just try to copy (COPY, NOT CUT) the ROSTER.DTA file to some other place and use that directory instead.
Edit:
If you're getting a 'file not found' error even if you're inserting the correct path, try this:
Go to the MM2 folder, double click MM2.EXE to fire up the game (instead of using the game's shortcut), transfer the characters as i indicated above, use V to view your imported characters (to make sure they're there) and then quit the game.
After that launch the game using the gog shortcut and hopefully everything will be working as intended.
I just did it and it seems to have worked.

Thanks for the help, what I ended up doing was just copying the roster.dta file from the MM1 folder to the MM2 folder and then lauched MM2 with the shortcut and at transfer I typed C:\roster.dta and it transfered my characters with no problem!

I don't think you need to finish the first game to import characters into the second, but if you haven't finished the first game your characters will have their stats and level reduced more so than if they had finished the game. There's details on this in the MM2 manual, which you can find in your install directory. You can also download the manual separately form the "additional content" list on your GOG account page (you have to click on the MM pack first).

The easiest way to do the transfer is the way Platno did it. Copy the MM1 roster file into the MM2 directory, then hit "T" to transfer the characters, and when it asks for the path, just type c:\roster.dta and it should find it.
ok thanx im gonna try to finish mm1 even its something to get used to :) my party is lvl 4 atm.
Well I was able to transfer my characters, but it didn't quite work as I thought..

In MM1 I got to the end and it says "Congratulations distinguished travelers! The gates are now open to you, in order to pass through you must first find might and magic book two!".

So I quit the game, do the roster.dta thing, and the only names that transferred are the ones that came with the MM1 game (i.e. Sir Garland, Zenon III, etc.) The ones I created are not there. Not sure what the deal is, but it looks like I will have to start over with new toons in mm2, oh well!
NM I got it to work after digging a little more on the forums. It had to do with the fact that the ROSTER.DTA file in the MM1 directory is NOT the file that has the saved games. I did a full search for ROSTER.DTA and there's some kind of virtual folder with the actual saved game. Renamed it MM1.DTA, put it in the regular MM2 directory, Opened MM2 as administrator, went to transfer characters and typed C:\MM1.DTA .... and blammo it worked! :D

Nice thanks for the info so i search for roster.dta and i have to rename it to mm1.dta?
OK... that virtual folder thing only happens if you installed the game in the default directory AND you are not running it as admin (on Windows 7 / Vista). I installed mine in C:\games, and all I had to do was grab roster.dta from the MM1 directory and move it to the MM2 directory, and I was able to import fine.

But if you installed to the default location in Program Files, and you're not running as admin, Windows might redirect the save file somewhere else.

So what I would do is, first just try grabbing roster.dta from the MM1 folder, copy it to the MM2 folder, and try importing. Then check and see if your characters are available in MM2. If they're NOT there, then search your computer for roster.dta, and look for the second copy in a virtual folder somewhere. Copy that one into the MM2 folder (you don't have to rename it if you don't want to, you can just overwrite the other one) and then try importing characters again. Should work the second time if it didn't the first time.

So if its in another location then the default one it will be ok? Then i wont have any trouble since i always install gog games in my games directory.

Should be. Try it and see! You can always import again if it doesn't work.

Another way to check is to look at the date stamp on the roster.dta file. If it's your real save file, it should have been updated the last time you saved, but if it's not the real save file, it will still show the date you installed the game.

Thx. Followed your instructions and it worked for me as well.
