Hey guys I needed some help. I'm playing through Might and Magic 1 (the game which kicked off my crpging experience) once again. However, I notice there is a text speed issue when playing on a modern computer. When I try to slow the game down through ctr + f11 it just slows the game down and the text is still barely readable What should I do to fix this? I heard there is a patch but it's no longer accessible.

thanks guys!
The GOG forums have you covered. The patch is attached to this post:

http://www.gog.com/forum/might_and_magic_series/mm1_read_this_if_you_think_the_text_appears_too_fast/post38

Just download that file, change the extension from .jpg to .exe, put it in your MM1 install directory, and run it. It will slow down ALMOST all text in the game. Certain rare text messages, like when enemies skip their turn during combat, will still flash by really fast, but everything else will be much slower. If you miss a rare message that you think is important, google can usually tell you what it said.

Make sure you also set the (D)elay in combat. I think you have to set this every time you run the game. It's an in-game text speed setting. I always set it to the slowest setting because I could also advance text manually with a keypress.

Yes I tried that, however the file is down. I couldn't download it for some reason.

I have mirrored it on PCGamingWiki.

That's because the extension had to be changed to jpg to allow it to be attached.

Instead of opening it, you have to right-click, Save As, and after it's saved change the extension to exe. Visible extensions have to be enabled in order to do this.

EDIT: Sorry if it is obvious and you already tried that.

yeah, sorry lol I figured it out right after I posted. Might and Magic is a great game. It makes newer games seem like childsplay with the amount of difficulty. I cant help but feel death is always around the corner. I wish modern games were made like this.

How true. That's what I loved about it. No gradual increase difficulty. All areas were open but you could be surrounded by a zillion dragons while still level 1... It was great fun.

Glad you got it working! Enjoy the game!

I feel like I should recommend some really difficult games to you now, but for some reason I'm drawing a blank. Except for roguelikes, which are certainly difficult. My personal favorite is Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup, which is also free. But you have to be OK with perma-death.

I know there's been something of a resurgence in extremely difficult games recently, especially in the indie scene, possibly related to the rise in games inspired by roguelikes (like Spelunky or The Binding of Isaac, for example).

Anyone want to chime in with some good, tough games, especially RPGs? I've heard good things about Dark Souls but haven't tried it myself yet.

I'd like to know a few titles too. For me though, I'd like it to be a game where you can save (though not necessarily everywhere; MM1 system of inns only is good) and/or let it be non-randomized.

I don't mind no-save permadeath, where you have to start from the beginning each time, but in this case I'd like it to be non-randomized, so you actually learn from your mistakes and don't go to the difficult area where you were killed.

I find this happens even in randomized games, at least in the good ones. For example, in Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup you will quickly learn not to enter the Orcish Mines until you are ready, even if the exact layout of the Orcish Mines is different every game. You'll know from previous playthroughs what kinds of enemies will be there, how the layouts are likely to look, etc.

Anyway, I'll post more recommendations if I think of any.

EDIT: Trying to think of other tough RPGs... I remembered that I've heard very good things about Legend of Grimrock and even better things about Legend of Grimrock 2, but I haven't tried either myself yet (the first one is in my backlog).
