Not sure, but usually when gems disappear it's just from spells. You might try using the "share" option to distribute everyone's gems evenly so she'll have some more. Your non-spellcasters are probably carrying a lot.

Unfortunately I think that that is the intended behavior. If you return to the hermit, make sure you don't have any items you care about in your backpack! But the pirate maps are useful, so they're worth keeping.


I don't remember, but I think the item is generally considered the best reward.

So what should I do about the items in backpack (potions... etc)? They cannot be equipped, and as far as I know there is no way of storing them somewhere and retrieving them later... or is there?

Are the items you receive random? It might be a good idea then to try it again...

You can store them on other characters... go to Sorpigal, sign into the inn, then sign out using some of your characters and some of the pre-made characters. Then you can give the items to the premade characters, sign back into the inn, and then grab your normal party. If you're using the premade characters as your party, you can just create some dummy characters to store your spare items for you. Then visit the hermit, get the pirate maps, then return to the inn and use the same trick to get your items back.

An alternative is to take only some of your characters to see the hermit, leaving the rest at the inn with your items.


My vague memory was that I got a better item than that as a reward, so it might be random. You can always re-do the quest I think. Could be worth trying. Also, you can re-do the quest to see how much gold you get.

What exactly does Luck affect? Does Accuracy affect both ranged and mellee?

Luck is suspected to affect your success chances at "save or else" situations, whether you get poisoned or not by a hit from a poisoning monster for example. It might also affect removing traps.
I had a character with only 9 accuracy in MM1 and she did hit quite well.

Checking the manual might help.

The manual claims that Luck is a key stat for a robber, so I think it affects the disarming of traps. Which is actually quite useful. Accuracy is listed as an important stat for archers, so I've always assumed it's only for ranged attacks. For melee, the biggest things affecting whether or not I hit the enemy seemed to be my character's class (knights hit more than robbers) and my character's level. When fighting enemies that were too hard for me, my characters would miss all the time, but after I'd gained a few levels, they'd hit much more reliably.

Also as you gain levels your knights, clerics and archers will gain extra attacks per turn. Since each attack has a separate chance to hit, this means you'll hit more often on any given "attack" command during battle. For example, if you have your knight attack an enemy he might attack twice and hit once, so he'll still do some damage.

Thanks. It doesn't mention that luck is important to robbers in my manual... Just "Any character's chance of succeeding, when all else fails. A random element whose effects cannot be predicted."

Are there any negative consequences for not completing a quest in time? And if there aren't any, what's the cleric spell remove quest used for?

I've finally solved the mystery of disappearing gems (after it happened yet again right after I moved a load of gems from my fighter to sorceress). Apparently only 1 byte is used to store the number of gems carried, so at 256 it overflows to 0.

Ah, all those lost gems...

Check the part of the manual about character creation... I think for each class it lists which stats you should focus on. My memory is that for the Robber it tells you to make sure you have high luck. But I could also be thinking of the MM2 manual, so I'm not sure.

Regarding gems, I don't think it's true that they overflow at 255, as I remember having more than that (although again, I may be remembering MM2 instead). However, there are some enemies that might steal your gems. It can be easy to miss this notification during battle.

It does overflow, but it does so in a strange manner. It's not at 255 but it can if certain things happen while they are above 255.

I've tested it myself. Given 255 gems, everything is ok. Gave one more, it turned to 0. In Algary, just outside the inn. But like Orryrro said, it's influenced by other things because I think I remember having it above 255 another time myself...
Anyway, I'll be careful now.
