Hello,
i wonder myself if mm6 use just software mode or hardware acceleration. I think it's just software rendering but somebody can confirm that? Because i have an old computer with a very old graphic card which do not support hardware acceleration. And can you tell me if you know good rpg like might and magic series that we can run in software mode ?

MM6 uses only software mode. MM7 and MM8 have options for both - software and hardware modes, with software mode being more preferable (hardware mode had some issues).

Closest game to MM6 is of course MM7 and MM8, but nothing else like that, I am afraid.

Wizardry 8 also has software rendering. But it is very different beast from MM6. Basically MM6 is unique "beast" of its kind, with MM7 and MM8 being the only games which were somewhat close to its goodness. If you are new to MM games, MM6 will easily give you at least 100 hours of gameplay, so you wn't be bothering with finding new game to play for quite a time :)

Basically, any DOS game is not going to use hardware acceleration.

In particularly, this includes the entire Wizardry series (not just 8), as well as all the SSI AD&D games, and even Arena and Daggerfall (although Daggerfall might be a bit sluggish under emulation and good luck trying to run it on bare hardware). You could also try looking at the Ultima series (except 9), including the Ultima Underworld games.

I actually consider Wizardry 8 one of the best RPGs of all time; it is definitely one of my favorites. (That reminds me; I am in the middle of a playthrough and haven't gotten back to it in a while.) It is also a unique "beast", with Wizardry 6 and 7 being the only similar games, but with much uglier game mechanics.

That's because you didn't play Might and Magic VI+ yet... You rob yourself of a fantastic game... I couldn't stand Wizardry 8 after playing MM games. I tried my hardest, but Wizardry 8 loses to MM 6 in way too many aspects.

You haven't properly played Wizardry 8 yet. (Hacking level 50 characters, which is twice the expected end game level, doesn't count.)

Currently I have fun with my legit Lv. 78 characters in MM6 and I have yet quite a number of things to do to finish main quests :)

When I hacked my characters, I was very upset at actual size of Wizardry 8. It is tiny. Extremely tiny. Doesn't compare to MM6 at all. Aside from first dungeon, there are barely even any dungeons in the game. And level scaling (with loot sensor as "bonus") is coup de grace. Also I usually use hacking as absolutely last thing in CRPGs, I completed games like Phantasy Star II without any manuals and Wizardry 8 basically forced me to hack the game, which speaks volumes. I tried to love Wizardty 8, but it is miles away from what I find as enjoyable game.

That's not even true, there were games for the 3dfx cards like Voodoo that uised their own graphic library called Glide (a subset of OpenGL functionality), and those games run under DOS since thay did not need DirectX. Games like SpecOps, Quake, etc.

Of course, any game using Direct3D needed DirectX and Windows.
