The map persperctive in World of Xeen makes the game more difficult since you cant tell exactly where you are.

Is there an overview map in game or perhaps an image available somewhere?
Yes, they're easily found on Google image search, like this one:

there's also maps in the goodies for world of xeen
If you don't mind the potential for spoilers, there are also maps reprinted in the various cluebooks available in the goodies. This includes not just the overworld map, but also maps for the Darkside Skyroad, all towns, and all dungeons. Unlike the composite linked in the first answer, the cluebook maps are not stitched together, so you would be paging around a bit. Even so, the cluebook maps are not as constrained as the in-game Wizard Eye map.
Basically it boils down to two different maps:

- the pretty hand-drawn map from the goodies pack is not precise – it shows you the general location of the landmarks just to get you interested,

- the linked map is from the game engine, useful mainly when you need the precise location of something.

You can also take advantage of the map grid/quadrant system if you know the exact coordinates.

In case you didn't know this already, you can also view the map in-game by pressing "M". Only areas you explored. But that tells you exactly where you are.

Actually, I believe it only lets you see areas you've explored with at least one character with the Cartographer skill in the party.

Most players won't notice this because Sorcerers start with this skill. However:
* If you try playing without a Sorcerer, you won't have this skill at the start. Fortunately, somebody in the starting towns (Vertigo and Castleview) will teach this skill for a cheap price (IIRC), so it's generally not much of an issue.
* There is at least one event that will result in a character losing skills; triggering that event could cause you to end up not having this skill (but you can relearn it, fortunately). (If your thought is to reload immediately after triggering this event, I should point out that the event also has a beneficial effect, so you *might* want to keep the effect.)
Thanks for the replies guys, it is a really good game but navigation was difficult since I could only see a small section in the map view. I didnt know there were maps in the extras with the game.

That forest area is a nightmare to navigate. All these hidden areas etc.

I just wanted to necro this thread to point out that this game is a perfect candidate for spreadsheet mapping. For the cartographers among us, this game is gold!
I posted this in another thread recently, but this will solve all your mapping issues in Might and Magic 1-5

It's a companion app called Where Are We. It adds a beautiful detailed automap, and the overworld is even backgrounded with the hand drawn game maps.

It also adds windows for character stats, inventory, combat, shops, item descriptions, a spell list, and more! It does about everything you could ever want, and it doesn't change or cheat the games. It just gives you easy to see information at a glance.

I wholeheartedly recommend using Where Are We with Might and Magic 1-5. Play around with the options and figure out how you want to arrange your windows that suit you best. The only thing you really need to do on a technical level in edit the Dosbox config file in you might and magic game folder to launch the game windowed at whatever rez you perfer for the size you need the game window. I personally use 1200x900 and i have room for the other windows I need.
