I noticed that Meteor Strike in MM8 has been changed.
In MM6 and 7, it was self directing. The Meteor Strike would hit monsters where ever they were as long as they were in sight. This made MS very valuable. Starburst was the same.
Death Blossom would only go to one site in front of your Party making it harder to use and less valuable.

In MM8, Meteor Strike is like Death Blossom and only hits in a certain place.
I was wonder if Starburst also changed?
I never self-direct Meteor Shower or Starburst in MM6-7 ... too much chance of something going awry, as has obviously happened to me. I set them as the quickspell, then point the cursor to where I want it to hit and hit "S" to activate the spell. That way, it goes where I want it to. Unfortunately, you are correct about Death Blossom, which I have found to be utterly useless.

I think they both work the same in MM8 as in MM6-7, though ... I've used them on the Plane Between Planes, and they hit where I want them to. Death Blossom, I do not believe I have tried ... if I cannot direct it where I want, I do not like it much.

I tried MS in MM8 recently, and it appeared to me that it went only one place which was directly in front of the Party rather than hitting the nearest group of monsters. I will fire the game up again to see if I have it wrong.
Thanks.

I'm playing MM6 with Grayface 2.0 user patch compilation which I believe fixed Meteor Shower (and Starburst? haven't tried that) to only target monsters within normal bow and spell range.

The advantage that MS has it that it will hit the nearest/strongest group coming at you. I thought it had been changed for MM8 but am told otherwise but haven't been able to confirm.
It is such that you can turn your party away from the creature standing in front of you, and, as long as you can't see that monster any longer, hit a party approaching from a distance. That's a heck of plus for that spell (over Death Blossom.) Earth Magic is clearly the step child in offensive spells. Though I am a big fan of Rock Blast.
I prefer islavin2011's method, so I can choose to target the biggest group rather than the nearest (which may be too few enemies to be worth the spell points).

macAilpin, what your "in sight" implies, and the patch's readme too, is that in the unpatched game, walking through an empty landscape in daylight and good weather, one could round a corner or top a rise, spot enemies miles off, and immediately hit them way beyond the distance they can hit back. Which is something I can understand the developers deciding to change for MM8, if indeed they did.
