Manu270891: I managed to make MGS 1 work with the Widescreen patch by nemesis2000:
1- Download the nemesis2000 widescreen patch from
http://ps2wide.net/pc.html#mgs and extract all files from "mgs.7z" (the password is "mgs") except "upx.bat" and "upx.exe" to the installation directory, overwriting "ddraw.dll". GOG's release "ddraw.dll" is actually a dgVoodoo wrapper, but it must be replaced so the widescreen patch works. This makes the "dxcfg.exe" setup tool useless.
2- Edit "mgs1w.ini" to select the resolution. The letterboxing from the cutscenes can be removed too.
3- If the selected resolution's width/height is bigger than 2048 pixels, LegacyD3DResolutionHack must be used. Download it from
https://github.com/UCyborg/LegacyD3DResolutionHack/releases and extract both .dll files to the installation folder.
4- Detele the existing "mgsvideo.cfg" and "mgsvideo1.cfg" files in the installation's folder.
5- Finally, I created a .sdb file with Compatibility Administrator to include the following fixes for "mgsi.exe" and "mgsvr.exe": "ForceSimpleWindow", "HighDpiAware", and "RunAsAdmin", which makes the game run in fullscreen with the widescreen patch. You can download it here:
https://mega.nz/file/UogW1BDT#HvSERgbKp0Q4F2GkkAqY-_TiwYFElB4vCN0Dbw7tQn4. To install it, open CMD (Admin) where the .sdb file is located and type "sdbinst "GOG MGS Compatibility Fixes.sdb"". To uninstall it, type " sdbinst -u "GOG MGS Compatibility Fixes.sdb"".
6- This fix has a little problem, the main menu lags a lot on high resolutions (at least in 4K), but gameplay runs at a solid 30 fps, just like the original game did.
I also noticed that the "demo\s0503a1.dmo" file is not the same as the retail version. If anybody knows what they changed, it would be great to know.
Here are two 4K screenshots from the first section of the game:
https://imgur.com/YRGvX0e https://imgur.com/pVy78W1 I tried the above, and it works with one exception: Don't download the cracks, you don't need them. In fact, it doesn't work with the cracks. I can play the main game fine, but the VR missions won't launch.
