Trying to use a controller and none of the controls are natural at all and changing the controls in the config seem to do nothing at all in either game. Is there a way to actually change the controls since nothing seems to work? Its completely unplayable with the default controls.

EDIT: I found a fix for MGS2's shitty controls and this makes it perfect. Game runs great and you can actually change the controls to match the PS2 version. github.com/VFansss/mgs2-v-s-fix/wiki

Controls are fine for me with MGS 1, Changed some in the options to make it more like the Playstation version.

Except you have to use the analog stick for movement, you can map the d-pad but diagonal directions don't work.

MGS1 did not have analog movment.

It kinda did. First off though, it was one of these PS1 games were you had to manually activate the analogue sticks on the controller every time you booted up the game.

And while the analogue sticks worked exactly like the d-pad while moving around, looking around in first person view actually did make use of analogue movement, letting you look slightly in any direction instead of having your neck instantly snap to it's limit like it did with the d-pad. Unfortunatly the analogue stick in the PC port does not work like it did on PS1.

You could look in 1st person with analog but you could've move snake himself with it. He had no walk control in the first game.

Control for Metal Gear Solid is fine enough. Edited them for a bit more distance for my fingers, but the general layout was the same. Played great without a controller.

Analog stick did work on PS1 version. With d-pad you can run in eight directions, while with analog you turn much more smoothly. That's one thing I really dislike about PC version as I hated playing with d-pad on PS1 version.

And your problem is not being able to use the D-pad?....What the f *** using the analog sticks would be a bonus imo.

Can the first person aiming mode be used with the Mouse in MGS2?

My Gamepad died and, well, MGS plays relatively well with keyboard. It could be more confortable but for now it's fine for me. But being the FPS mode of MGS2 more detailed, I have sme doubts about the use of keyboard only with this game.

The original game did not have dialog movement. It was all d-pad.

The PS3, however, did have a control setting where analog movement was made possible.
