I'm making this topic to try and gather all relevant info in one place. While we did a full playthroughs of both games, different software / gamepad configurations mean different set of problems.

Basic notes:
- in MGS, keys can be remapped via in-game OPTIONS > CONTROLLER OPTIONS panel. In MGS2, separate config utility can be launched via 'Game Settings' shortcut in GOG Galaxy or directly from game folder: bin/MGS2SConfig.exe

- both games store config files in their own folders; if games were installed to a protected folder (like Program Files), it might be necessary to run the application with admin rights for mapping changes to be saved;

- there is a known limitation for XInput gamepads (X360, XB1), that both triggers are treated as the same button. DirectInput pads should allow for separate trigger binding;

Under investigation:
- there is a possible conflict between Steam controller interface that we'll be checking out. For now, if you are experiencing issues with Steam running in the background, please try to log out / close the Steam client and re-run the game.

I'll try to keep this post updated as we'll gather more info from users over the weekend.
Thanks Thiev you are a legend.

Thiev: ...
Cheers for the GOG team's hard work (but please do find time for a break; it is the weekend :)) You might look into even incorporating one or more of the fan patches that people keep talking about; of course there is likely legal issues involved.

edit: and maybe this is worth stickying? https://www.gog.com/forum/metal_gear_series/mgs2_vs_fixunofficial_patch

I was only able to play using the controller by starting the game through steam, in non-steam games, the gog galaxy client doesn't recognize my ps4 dualshock, even using DS4Windows, is there any solution? for the launcher to recognize control?
The input from the analog sticks of my XBox 360 controller sticks. E.g., at the main menu, I can't get it to stop scrolling down the options. Only if I spam X can I choose an option but even then it's a random one because the options scroll down so fast.
I am having major input latency with either keyboard or xbox controller. I've tried turning off vsync in the GOG galaxy direct x options but that does nothing to alleviate the issue. It makes the game very... annoying to play. Not impossible but also takes away some of the enjoyment.

Are these controls getting fixed. Because as it stands mgs1 doesn't recognize my xbox controller on the config input screen, and mgs2 doesn't even support an option to change the controls. Make this freaking work! There are metal gears to destroy and I can't because of some minor inconveniences, and this is unacceptable.
Good day sir!

P.s. joking a little bit, but genuinely disappointed in this.
i REALLY dont get why gog published a recommended button layout sheet instead of offering an awesome layout out of the box

whats the point launching a game with a crappy layout that isnt comfortable to play

I think part of the problem is related to the version we're getting, which is 1.0, there's a patch that updates the game to version 2.0, but the installer requires to uninstall version 1.0 so it is a pain in the behind to get this working. Seems to Vs fix is the only solution for the time being, but I would prefer if we could get this fix directly by GOG and then just install and uninstall as we see fit.
Ok I was able to get the Xbox One controller working with all the buttons and triggers, had to use Xinput plus and now seems to be OK, the only problem I have is XINPUT always beeps when you start using it. I could upload the dlls and ini files to a google drive if any of you guys is interested.

** Fixed it by tweaking the ini file, overall I'm satisfied on how this is running.**

1.Triggers work flawless with Metal Gear Solid using Xbox one controllers.
2.D-pad diagonals not working in Metal Gear Solid,please fix it.
3.Metal Gear (1987) config utility does not allow the use of the d-pad. it would be much better to use the d-pad for movement instead of the analog stick.

Thank you for all your hard work.

Can you recheck the triggers not working for MGS1+2? They seem to work flawless for me so not sure why GOG maternal states that triggers are not mappable. Im using the Xbox One controller with the official bluetooth adapter.

Using a dongle here and had to use the xinput plus to get the triggers working on MGS2, maybe you have a wrapper running on the whole system intercepting call to directinput
Hey, it's me again.
Metal Gear Solid 2 needs more love.
Why not use a small Xinput to DirectInput wrapper?
The lack of triggers support can be very frustrating.

for what concerns MGS1:
i'm playing it from the get go with my ps4 controller wired to PC, the layout is quite the same of native PSX controllers, it's just that the directional buttons are not working and using always analog but other than that it's always working.

for MGS2 these problems you all mentoned might come up though.
