I'm having trouble using the keyboard only control scheme that is set as the default in the first MDK. Can someone post how they've remapped the controls to make it feel more like a modern shooter. I keep trying to use a WASD setup but the 'a' key just causes me to look up instead of move left once I've finished the initial skydiving sequence. Any help would be appreciated.

what i do with old games that were out before WASD is i control them the way its ment to be.
If i were not suppoesed to use mouse look. then i wont use it. it just makes the games as hard as they were supposed to be :-)
im saying you have to do what i do. i just say what i do to these "problems"
The second set of defaults is WASD, try that.
Don't forget that you need to click on the individual characters' buttons to change their unique binds. That confused me for a while at the start of the game: I assumed that I was looking at Kurt's and that clicking them switched tab, so to speak.
does anyone know how to DELETE a key assignment? i guess i should go over the manual too but there seems only to be a way to pile on assignments to keys and there's evidently no prohibition to having one key do totally different things so is there a way to just delete if you make a mistake?

Are you talking about the second game?

I've been binding away the unwanted key to something I'm never going to press.

The age of this game does limit extensive user control and customization. I too ran into this problem once I started playing after over a decade.
Here's what I did:
For the mouse setup, I changed the X axis to turn and the Y axis off entirely. The Z axis stayed on. You don't need to worry too much about looking up/down on a whim, because as long as you are in a straight-ish path with the enemy, you'll be fine. Also, you can quickly shoot stuff freely while in sniper mode. Left click is fire, and right click is Turbo.
For the keyboard, I mapped the W and S to forward and back; A and D are strafe left and right, respectively. Space is jump; sniping mode is Shift. Select Item Left is Q and Select Item Right is E. Use Item is R (or G if you like).
You'll likely find the perfect combination to your own input, but this one works for me. Good luck!

To delete a key assignment, select the action you want and press 'DELETE' on your keyboard. Make sure you don't map the delete key to what you want, though.
I had a heck of a time getting the key assignment to one I could work with, but it pays off if you don't have a controller to work with.
I play a lot of modern shooters, so I set up my keys to match those as close as possible:
Movement: WASD (with A and D being strafe/sidestepping instead of turning)
Use the mouse to turn/look/adjust camera, and left-click to shoot
Shift to go into sniper mode, R and F to zoom in and out
E uses items, 1 and 2 to switch between them
Space is to jump
Caps is to toggle run
I believe that's all of them. It works pretty well for me, the only issue is that moving the mouse forward or backward actually makes your character move forward or backward. This caused some issues in platforming, when all I wanted to do was turn, but I end up walking off the ledg by accident.

you can turn off mouse-based movement (not turning and rotating) in the mouse options in the options menu,

I tried something similar, but I have the problem that the flight sequences (level intros and outros) have awkward controls, with up-down and left-right in different places.
Is there any way to use alternative controls for those scenes or map two keys for the same action? For the time being I use the default controls (almost), but strafing feels weird.

Just make sure you never EVER accidentally press that comma! :-D

Unfortunately, this control method doesn't work as well for the flight sequences, but they are so brief that I dealt with it. You can only have one control setup, to my knowledge. The ratio of ground time to flight time is 20:1, so I say take the good with the not-as-good. Sorry I couldn't have been a better help, but you'll get used to it.
