I have two asteroid clusters in systems near me that seem to house pirates. I have a fleet located at, what I assume, a pirate base. However there does not seem to be an option to attack. The fleet arrived last turn so it still has a movement option available. How do I attack the base? Can I even do that?
You need Destroyers with nukes that can bombard the asteroids to death.

I can confirm this as well - you need at least one destroyer over the pirate planet and pick the attack option (and nuke next).

You have at least 1 nuke on each destroyer per turn, so if you didn't manage to destroy the base, you can try the next turn, or the next turn, and until you manage to destroy it.

Keep in mind that the pirate ships just randomly spawn over a pirate planet, so don't leave a single destroyer there, protect him with other ships until the base is destroyed.

BTW today I saw the pirates generate a base on the same planet 3 times.

Yea. I destroyed a pirate base on some asteroids, wiping out the everyone. Left it. A couple of turns later, pirates were there again. It just seemed a little quick for pirates to repopulate the area so quick.
Ok thanks much for the info.
the randomly respawning pirate bases are really, really annoying.
on my first test game this cost me 1 colony and 1 star factory, i hope they remove this or at least change it.
it is no fun if enemies suddenly spawn from nowhere and attack your planets.
I'm 95% sure I killed one with a cruiser; the "need a destroyer" message seems to be a leftover from when somebody had the bright idea to give ships in MoO rock, paper, scissors MMO balancing. It needs bombs equipped, thats it.

You sure the base respawned and not maybe Pirates came from another base? There can be multiple bases and when one is gone it should be gone (at least its what I saw so far).

In my case they definitely spawned or a new pirate base. After I killed the respawners I checked and found a new pirate base which I had to destroy again. That`s why it seemed wrong. It was as if they snuck in a completely new base literally under my nose after the 1st was destroyed.

They should really spawn somewhere else, far away from where the last base was killed.

yes, they definitly respawned (or at least randomly spawned and where not there before)
It happened during the "test game" or whatever it's called where you play as humans.

There is an option to turn them off if you dislike how they currently function.

If you put a listening outpost they should stop spawning. Pirate bases usually spawn in systems that you can't see.
has anyone tried landing marines on a planetary base? I'd be curious to see if you gain another colony with this tactic
