Just wondering does anyone find that MAX1 is very slow and laggy. For me I can barely even play the game. I have more than the required specs for the game but it still lags really bad. Can anyone help me out with this problem. Thanks
can anyone help me then?
I have the same problem. (Window XP here, dosbox)

It runs twice as fast as my archaic windows 98 PC (without dosbox)
It's running fine on my computer, although I run through DOSBox on Ubuntu Linux. I didn't do to much changes to the dosbox.conf. Only thing is I'm using openglnb for rendering. I would suggest changing the frameskip value as suggested by the DOSBox homepage, or pressing CTRL+F12 in DOSBox to increase the CPU cycles.

I'm on an Intel Core i5 btw.

I am running the GOG version on an XP system with a Dual Core Opteron AMD CPU and M.A.X. runs like a top.
The only trouble I had was after the original install the game would crash at the beginning of the opening video. But once I changed the Graphic Mode from “Overlay” to “DDraw” in the DOSBOX Graphic Mode Setup bingo no more issues! I even changed the resolution to 1900 x 1200 and now it is looks beautiful on my 24” flat screen.

This game rocks so far. Thanks for the tips!
I am running on win7 - 64bit and i was able to solve problem with slowing MAX. In file dosbox MAX1 (in folder with game) I set memsize=31, core=dynamic and cycles=35000. These amounts may be different, regarding individual parametres of computers. But in my case - it helped.
Win 7 - 64bit here, as well. Initially, I had sound stuttering, a sign of something going wrong.
I set the output=openglnb(instead of overlay. ddraw produced awful results), cycles=auto(instead of max) and core=dynamic(instead of auto, although I doubt this truly made a difference) and not only the stuttering disappeared, but I had to put the scrolling speed all the way down(with the initial settings I had to let it 3 clicks off from lowest).

It definitely helped.

I have put memory=256, as well, since I do have a great deal of memory on my PC.( in the hopes of overriding the end turn timer bug, hopefully) but this did not prevent the stuttering at all(it was the first setting I changed).
