I am trying to find the rat caves. However, they aren't shown on the map. How do I get there from the city?

They are directly north of the Tower of Melancholy.

The town has 3 gates. South (where you come from) north-west and south-east. Take that last one and follow the road east then north. It's after the tower. You should pretty much ignore everything on the way for now, many encounters here are too strong for you until you clear the cave and the beach (north west gate this tame).
