Right, after getting the magic tunic and ball and leaving Twinsen's house through the fireplace, I accidentally fell off the cliff. There's no way back up that I can find, and I can't figure out how to open either of the doors in the cave. Do I need to restart?

You need to jump across some rock to the right its very close to the cliff and quite hard to see that you can actually go there.
