So I got the game running with the widescreen patch. I'd try to play it in 1920:1080 and I get a very small picture of the game but a giant black frame all around. Does anyone else experienced this "bug" and maybe solved it?

Please use a software called DxWnd to run the game in 1920x1080. DxWnd represents, to my knowledge, the simplest and most robust solution to run virtually any old-ish PC game on modern systems in resolution not originally supported by the game. I have just updated a thread on this forum discussing the DxWnd settings.
