PPFleury29: There may be a little more to installing those courses than copying just the crx files across.
I'll have to check my CD's first but won't have time till the weekend.
avatar
bfontes: Did this ever get resolved?
Can I get help with how to install extra courses, if it is more than just copying files over?
Yes, I did explain it after that post. Whatever course CD's you have, explore the CD contents in Windows. Check for the course name with a .CRX and also a .ENV extension. This is the course file (CRX) and the sound file (ENV) for the course. Some courses may have custom sounds so if you only copy/paste the .CRX file, you won't have the custom sounds. Some courses will only have a .CRX file and no custom sounds.

Nothing fancy needs to be done for installation. Just copy and paste any .CRX and .ENV files into the LS98 game directory and the courses will work.

foxgog: Now, I know at least what to look for in case I still get one of the other course addon CDs.
foxgog,

Do you have somewhere I can contact you privately? eg email

Hello PPFleury29!

What about a private message through GOG.com's built in chat function (account => chat)?
Maybe we need to add each other to our friends list, I do not know.

(I prefer to not put any of my e-mail addresses in a public forum.)

Kind regards,
foxgog

I tried that but your chat comes up as disabled and I think you also have friends switched off as your username doesn't come up on a search. Try send me a chat message. I just enabled it so you should be able to send it to me.

Hi PPFleury29,
I don't see Bay Hill on your list. It was a 386 Pro course that, I believe, can be upgraded to LS 98.

Hi Nospam123,
You are correct that Bay Hill was a Links 386 course but it cannot be converted for use in Links LS 98.
Bay Hill was later re-released for Links LS 99 but that version is also not compatible with Links LS 98.

Where can i find Pinehurst No. 8? I searched all shops, eBay, Amazon, etc and cant find one single copy of the US Open Addon that contains Pinehurst No. 8. There are also no downloads on the Internet. Nothing.

I noticed since the GOG Links releases the course add-ons do appear to have dried up a little as people must be snapping them up. eBay does have only one copy I could see currently.

In my country, there is absolutley nothing. No chance to buy a copy at all. I can't even find a download on the Internet.

Why can't you have it shipped to Germany?

Because the only seller on eBay doesn't ship to Germany. I wish I could simply download the course somewhere. That's a lot of trouble just to get the one and only course I don't have.
Odd question...why not buy link 2003 which is still sold online which has almost every course made? It seems to play better than the old Links games as well?
Ultimately the Install Add-ons menu, which doesn't seem to work for the GOG version, just copies files and creates registry entries based on the LINKSLS.INF file at the root of every CD. For the 5 course volumes, it really is as simple as copying the course files (and in that case, as others have pointed out, the registry entries are automatically created for you if you put them at the root of the game directory), but other discs can have extras like Resorts or Flyby videos, which don't seem to install automatically. (Flybys are named the same for every course, so you can't put them at the root, and Resorts have settings that the game can't figure out from the files alone.) To be fair, these are just vanity, so you may just stop caring and be content with copy-pasting courses, but out of curiosity, I have went through the trouble of installing Congress Country Club manually, and I thought I should share the steps it took, in case some of you find it useful:

0. Using regedit, export HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Access\Links LS 1998 to a file (as a backup if things go wrong)
1. Copy CONGRESS\CONGRESS.CRX and CONGRESS\CONGRESS.ENV to the game directory
2. Start the game, then exit. This will create some initial registry entries that we can use as a base for the following steps.
3. Delete CONGRESS\CONGRESS.CRX and CONGRESS\CONGRESS.ENV. (We'll add them again in the next step, but to a separate directory.)
4. Copy the CONGRESS and contour folders to the game directory
5. Move all the .rec files out of CONGRESS into to the game directory root
6. Export HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Access\Links LS 1998\Options\Resorts and HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Access\Links LS 1998\CRX\CourseX where X is the largest number in the CRX subtree. (So e.g. Course5 if Congress is the 5th course you have.)
7. Create a new .reg file using notepad, with the contents below. The first entry is new, so you can copy it as-is, whereas for the 2nd and 3rd entry, compare them to the files you exported in the previous step to make sure you don't accidentally remove any data that you don't want to. (E.g. if you have other extra resorts installed, you'll want to keep them in the Resorts list.) If you have a vanilla installation, this example should work as-is.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Access\Links LS 1998\Options\&Congressional C.C.]
"Tour"="contour\\tour.ls"
"TourCDVolume"="CONGRESS"
"TourCD"="Congressional Country Club"
"Icon"="congress.flc"
"IconLZ"="contour\\congress.ls"
"Title"="&Congressional C.C."

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Access\Links LS 1998\Options\Resorts]
"99"="&Other Resorts"
"Logo"="restlogo.flc"
"Shadow"="restshad.gif"
"Background"="restbkgd.gif"
"10"="&Kapalua Resort-Maui"
"Icon"="resorts.flc"
"IconLZ"="contour\\resorts.ls"
"Title"="R&esorts/Tours"
"40"="&Congressional C.C."

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Access\Links LS 1998\CRX\Course5]
"Install"="0"
"Path"="CONGRESS\\CONGRESS.CRX"
"Name"="Congressional Country Club"
"Version"="768"
"CDTitle"="Congressional Course CD"
"Tour"="&Congressional C.C."
"CDPath"="CONGRESS\\CONGRESS.CRX"

8. Save the reg file, then double-click it to add it to the Registry. (Windows will ask you to confirm, say yes.) Then start the game. The Congress Course should be available and it should properly link to the Congress CC resort. The new resort should also be available in the menu, and the videos should play. The recorded players should also be available, and the flyby videos should play in-game.

This same method should roughly work for other resorts: create a reg file similar to mine, but use the values from the LINKSLS.INF of your particular CD. I hope this helps!

(edit: in my original post, I wasn't able to make the flyby videos work. I have updated it now with proper instructions for working flybys!)

Thanks madve2! I followed these instructions for the Davis Love III / Sea Island CD, and thought I'd post the resulting regedit file as well. The course and resort seem to load, but you can't play as Davis Love III the same way you can pick Arnold Palmer - I'm not sure what's missing/wrong.

You're welcome, I'm glad you found my post useful!

Indeed the Davis Love CD is the one that caused me the most trouble as well :) (I've got my hands on it after I've written my previous post.) The problem being, that one of the files that the game needs for the player animations cannot be found on the disc as-is; it looks like it is generated as part of the installation process (similar to how the import process for Links 386 courses work I guess). Therefore you can't (or at least I wasn't able to) make it work with simple copy-pasting and registry editing. (Which is weird because basically anything else I've tried works that way – some CDs have 3D "virtual tours", and those work by copy-pasting too.)

In the end, I used a virtual machine and an original Links LS base game to install the add-on CD "properly", and then grabbed the missing file (DAVISIII.ani) out of the virtual machine for use with the GOG version.

All in all, you need these 3 files (and no registry changes):

1. Copy DAVIS30.LS from the ANI folder on the CD into the ANI folder inside the game directory
2. Copy DAVISYJA6.pin from the CD root into the game directory root
3. Copy DAVISIII.ani (not on the CD, as mentioned above) into the ANI folder inside the game directory

If you don't want to go through the virtual machine method for obtaining the last file, this link should work as well: https://www.mediafire.com/file/6igj6yexfqxvybg/DAVISIII.ANI/file

Good luck!
