QWEEDDYZ: What if they read all of that? And thats why they rollback it. It is not so clear you this time on GOG side even if some kinda, partially.
They saw active discussion, saw still something wrong with widescreen fix and decide thag enough to pull update back.
They saw nothing. Otherwise they added already ALL existing official localizations (from Steam guides) for ALL LOK games.
But they did NOTHING during many years (recheck the year of creating the appropriate Steam guides with localizations).
QWEEDDYZ: Your last opinion that someone always will whines isnt that about you too? you previously say same word many khm... "casuals" say - make it remastered or do not sell it at all.
As you could see (for example, the last remaster of Tomb Raider 1-3 on the Steam which will be released at the February of 2024), ANY remaster of ANY CD / Eidos / SE game is the standalone game, so - with this knowledge - I could not ask about remaster in the form of update of already existing game. And I knew that gog created their update in 2021 (I tested it and provided info about it in public place), so this their update is slightly better version of this initial update. Moreover, I provided for them all info about issues (but they did not fix them all in full measure), so I do not see the reason now to wait another 2 years for next their update with another veeeery small improvements while fans used SRHook (60 FPS and improper WideScreen which were integrated into gog update) without any complaints at all.
QWEEDDYZ: Widescreen for originally 4:3 only games or else improvments.
There are no problems with choosing 4:3 resolution in FullScreen (the game will have black borders on the sides).
Or to use Windowed Mode (true version of which was added in the gog update).
Or to use "proper WideScreen" from PCGamingWiki instead of "improper WideScreen".
Just because gog applied all their fixes in the kain2.exe - so it is not problem to unapply them.
QWEEDDYZ: First of games should be available.
It is not the first game. The first game is BO1. SR1 is the second game.
QWEEDDYZ: So i as always see this update was perfect. It revert back original game real media video files. And provide solution that did not change original files.
Disagree. It reverted back "original game real media video files" with the low quality and with the strange outdated external video playback instead of to replace bink engine by mpg engine without using any external engines at all. Moreover, bink engine used the same "original game real media video file" (just from PS and from extras of SR2 from PS2 - I am about HQ intro). In addition to this, now fans improved intro using neuronet (this video is provided on youtube).
I like this idea with returning back original rpl files by only one reason - smaller size of the game distributive (though - if you compare the size of both versions (1.2 original and 1.2 last update) - you will not see too big difference in the case of English version; just because bink video for it was created with as much as possible size without loosing its quality). Of course, I saw unclever modifications of this video from fans - their size was increased to several GB without such big improving of their quality. Another good example of such unclever modification - video for BO1 in OpenGL mod of Verok (such big increasing of the size of video files does not match at all smallest improvement of their quality).
BTW: kain2.exe (the main exe) in the gog version (last update) is modified file with another size and with the big amount of changes (some of them - without necessity) in this file. It is not the original kain2.exe (one more time - it is the main exe file of the game, it is not the video, which can be improved / changed without any influence on the game itself). My mod (Wrace's SR1 Patch = SR1 Enhanced Edition) contains the original kain2.exe without any modifications at all. While even the kain2.exe in the official version 1.2 on the Steam / gog has additional (unneeded) modifications.
QWEEDDYZ: i found GOGs DX Wrapper is one of best wrappers with minimum settings. It is better than Dege Voodoo, DxWnd and DDraw fix/wrappers/compattool that have or now have ini files.
(also i think Narzoul's older wrapper are good, BUT before ini file version since for such advanced wrappers GOGs are better).
You can compare the solution with gog's DirectX / DInput wrappers in the case of BO1 / SR1 with much more clever solutions which were created by fans - Verok's OpenGL wrapper for BO1, my SR1 Enhanced Edition, Gemini's Soul Fixer for SR2. All three do not change the main game exe at all (while gog does this in the case of every game), all three have only ONE main dll (with much smaller size than any of gog wrappers) which is loaded by the game (applying any fixes in the memory of process only; moreover, it is much more convenient to change their C code than to adjust the code inside physical main exe), all three have ONLY one main dll which solves any problems with old DInput (DInput gog wrapper has too big amount of additional settings in dixi.ini (one section for one type of gamepads) which are not used at all by the most of users) and two of them solve problems with old DDraw (NOT two standalone dll + additional psysical fixes in the main exe). And two solutions (my own and Soul Fixer) do not use additional dialogs (or something like dxcfg.exe) at all - they add needed items into the Game Menu.
Now - in the case of SR1 - we have additional (useless) Dialog Window with Settings (of dxcfg.exe) in addition to useless starting Dialog Window with Settings of original game (the proper resolution (= the resolution of Desktop) should be chosen automatically at first time; after that it can be changed inside the game like in SR2). The item for choosing Windowed Mode should be provided inside the game (like Soul Fixer does) - it will be the best solution. Idea with external dxcfg.exe is the outdated solution from 00's.
QWEEDDYZ: I dont know what is wrong with widescreen there. Original game widescreen enough for me, if GOGs even better - thats already perfect for me. Or they make it worse? I doubt.
The correct realization of WideScreen - to keep the 4:3 ratio for models without changing the vertical space and with increasing space from both sides of the center of the screen (i.e. player will see more environment at left and right). You can see this effect by using the fix from PCGamingWiki on the 16:9 monitor. Of course, it is not ideal, but you will see the true WideScreen.
Your "original game widescreen" is just stretching of 4:3 picture on the 16:9 monitor, so models (Raziel) will look oblate by vertical and / or streched by horizontal.
The realization of WideScreen in SRHook, my patch (just because it is just improved code of SRHook for that fans did not install SRHook with all bugs of this product and modified kain2.exe in addition; I am playing in Windowed Mode with 4:3 size of Window, so I do not have any problems with WideScreen at all) and in gog update - keeping the same space by horizontal with diminishing the space by vertical to keep the 4:3 ratio for models. So this fix diminishes the sector of view by vertical. Moreover, this fix causes the problems with displaying of Wraith Blade.
QWEEDDYZ: But i dont have game on GOG and didnt test it myself.
Ask someone about the SR1 with gog update, test it at first and only after that provide your judgements / opinion.
BTW: as I understood, it was the bad idea to ask you to write into gog support - it seems that you have very big fear to do this by yourself though you provide here (on this forum) support using unclever articles from gog site.
