Okay, so I read some of the old threads on here about using a custom DOSBOX with a glidewrapper, and I could not quite get those to work, however that is after trying the 3DFX shortcut that GOG included with the install. I'm assuming that GOG added this option recently, or at least after the other threads were finished up.

I am able to turn on hardware acceleration without problem, I see the 3DFX logo in full screen, I have V-Sync disabled in the nGLIDE settings, however the stuttering is completely unacceptable and renders the game unplayable. I have a very fast system with high-end specs including my graphics card, and I am running Windows 8. The stuttering is bad even on the menus where the frame rate is about 5 fps when moving the mouse.

Does any one have any suggestions? I was happily playing without hardware acceleration, but after I tried turning it on and seeing how substantial the improvement is, I cannot go back.
I can not give you a real solution to your specific issue. I have never used Glide on this game. I have had tons of issues getting other games to run in glide wrappers though. I would suggest you try a different wrapper. There have been several times were I needed to use a different wrapper, even though the one that wasn't working for me worked the best for everyone else.

EDIT:
Also try messing with your video driver configuration. Turn everything off, or to application control. That stuff doesn't always play nice with apps.

If I understand your post properly, I was having the same trouble with the game running at an extremely low frame rate when using the direct3d shortcut + hardware acceleration. I opened the dosboxLOL2.conf file (\GOG Games\Lands of Lore 1 and 2\Lands of Lore 2\dosboxLOL2.conf on my system), found the [cpu] section of the file, and set "cputype" to "=auto." That fixed it right up.

Wow, I'm glad someone finally had an idea to try. Thanks so much, I'll try this out when I get home from work! +1 for someone finally responding with some kind of solution to try.

Excellent! I'm glad I could help, then.

Yes, D3d is definitely the way to go--you can usually run 24/32-bits even if the game only supports 16-bit textures (Glide doesn't support > 16-bits) and D3d will always support resolutions > 1024x768 if you can get the game to run them. Last few times I've emulated Glide I've found it very limited in comparison with D3d in those two critical areas. For instance, using Glide in Divine Divinity won't support resolutions > 1024x768, although it's definitely better than DivineDivinity in D3d (which has always been seriously bugged)--so I usually run DD in software mode at 1920x1200, and it's much better than either 3d API in that particular game (looks 99% as good, too.) I'm trying to think of an old game that I've found to run better in Glide (than in D3d), recently, and can't really think of one...

I'm confused, are you suggesting that I can get better graphical fidelity and performance using D3D or something other than Glide emulation in LoL2? Or just commenting on how LoL with glide emulation is far better than without it?

Not sure what you're getting at.

The limitations of GLIDE, which are 1) no 24/32-bit rendering; 2) no resolutions higher than 1024x768. D3d has neither limitation. Even if you have a game which is strictly done with 16-bit textures, for instance, you can still run the game itself at a 32-bit depth using D3d--no can do with GLIDE. I had a V3 (as well as a V5 5.5k and of course a V2) and know that GLIDE would certainly support > 1024x768, but not all 3dfx 3d cards could support the higher resolutions, so most game developers at the time capped off at 1024x768 max for their GLIDE support, and the GLIDE wrapper I've used most (nGLIDE) follows that rule, apparently.

However, I need to look at LoL2 just to check on how I've configured it myself....;) I'll do that and come back and edit this post to reflect what I'm doing myself with the game (great scott--I'm getting senile...;))

Edit: Not much chance of playing LoL2 *without* GLIDE, of course...;) Ah, the old gray matter...not what it once was..!

I just had the problem with stuttering in 3dfx mode. For me the solution was to run the nglide configurer and disable vsync. After that I set a fixed cycles count of 10000 for startup. Then I set the up and down rates to 30000. When I get into the game I just hit ctrl+f12 to get proper performance in game and when I get to another movie I hit ctrl+f11 to have them work properly.

I think I misunderstood the conversation.
I think I heard from the you guys that
there is a superior D3d exe that is
included in the instalation. I cannot find it.
Can anyone give me the location?

Just tried disabling the vsync in the ngilde configurer and it worked very well! I didn't have to mess with the rates yet, but at the moment it is running with very few flaws with hardware acceleration enabled and no stuttering! Thanks!!

I checked, and the D3D version is not in my installation. It is on my CDROM version though.

Is it possible GOG staff (or EA) could distribute the Win95 executable LOLG95.EXE, as well as support files MSS32.DLL and LOLSETUP.EXE? If so, my DirectDraw emulator DXGL can as of version 0.5.5 run the Windows 95 version in Direct3D mode, even on NVIDIA cards. It just needs the following tweaks to work:
Copy LOLG95.EXE, MSS32.DLL, and LOLSETUP.EXE to the Lands of Lore 2 subfolder of the installation folder (example: GOG Games\Lands of Lore 1 and 2\Lands of Lore 2). If you have a Windows 95 compatible CDROM version kicking around, it should be in the INSTALL folder of CD #1.
Copy the contents of the DAT folder to the main installation folder.
Set up DXGL and use its built in configuration program to add LOLG95.exe.
Start LOLG95.exe with the following command line: "(installation folder)\Lands of Lore 2\LOLG95.EXE -CD ."
Go into Options, then Hardware Acceleration.
Turn on Acceleration, then turn off Switch Movie Display and Switch Automap Display.
Game should run quite well now. Tested in Windows 8.1 x64 on a Core i7.

You are the creator of DXGL? I'm following your DXGL development for a long time now. Could you upload your LOL2 exe?

I don't think I can legally upload that. Also, I have discovered several bugs including some major memory leaks, and crashing on my AMD Radeon laptop. (actually it was a bad install, not DXGL's fault.)
