Simply put, I'm absolutely amazed at how much I love playing LOL1. I usually load up all GOG games upon purchase and play them for a few minutes just to see if they are working correctly, then put them "on a shelf for later". But, this game pulled me in from the beginning, I've been playing it exclusively, and I have no desire to play anything else. What the hell???!!! It's like a dinosaur, but it just somehow "clicks" with me more than any game in I don't know how long. Yes, the dialogue and graphics are old and laughably silly, but it STILL JUST WORKS!

If I had found and played this when it was released (and I honestly don't know how I missed it), I have no doubt that it would have been one of my all time favorites.

This was what I named as my favorite game of all time for a very long time. The story may be a bit lacking now that I am older and more mature (lots of cliche stuff like the wicked witch in it) but I loved everything about it when I was a kid. It apparently was one of those high budget titles too that nobody has ever heard of since they could apparently afford patrick stewart as a voice actor. I remember being let down by LoL2 though, didn't like it and I tried really hard. LoL3 wasn't 1 I played till I was an adult and, while the character development was fun, the story was a joke unworthy of the name. I still have my original CD-Rom for this game.

I'm also enjoying LOL for the first time, and it's great!

I even like the graphics. I love that period where multimedia graphics weren't bad, but also werent as realistic. I find it very charming. Like the cutscene near the begining, where everybody gathers around the king to make a protective shield.

I also love LOL 1 and I can't possibly imagine why they have chosen to make the graphics so bad in 2. I know it should look realistic and such but the first 5 minutes of 2 made me exit the game but the first one looks so beautiful. Definately a step backwards if you ask me.

Absolutely agree. One of the best games I've bought on GOG. Been playing it continuously since Saturday and having a complete blast --- although I'm now absolutely stuck and have no idea what to do next :)

This is one of the games I feel the strongest nostalgia for. I remember playing it with my cousin back when it was released. We had such a difficult time getting through Draracle's cave, always dying of poison. We found the story very exciting too. The plot may be standard fare, the RPG elements rudimentary, the combat overly simplistic, but LOL1 does a lot of things right. It's just pure, unadulterated fun. Only gets annoying in the latter parts.

I agree OP, I just picked up this game recently as well and this game is awesome even though it looks old because the gameplay still holds up. Basically this game is what Legend of Grimmrock tried to be like, but this game does everything that game does, but better (well except for the graphics, of course)

I did finish it yesterday though and tried LOL2 and I'm not very fond of it, but I will give it a go sooner or later, but I can tell you that it definitely didn't suck me in as much as the original game although the opening cutscene is still pretty cool in LOL2.

I recognised Patrick Stewart as well but Interestingly he's not credited in the manual...

I got the urge to play some old games and I was debating this and the Realms of Arkania games. I decided on the latter at first, managed to get a party together then got shocked as to how tricky the opening area was. I mean it wasn't a dungeon, just a town, but most of the buildings look along so I had to use trial by error to find anywhere I wanted to go. I gave up, went for Lands of Lore 1 instead. Now this is how a game is meant to be written. The interface is so simple so I don't need to keep reading the manual.

This game is damn hard in it's own right though. The monsters don't give you any time to relax.

i was really enjoying this game up until i got to a dungeon i think near the end, cant remember the name but had white walls, then it just got really hard! got the game working on android in dosbosx turbo and works really well with touch screen! Really want to go back and finish this game at some point!

Perhaps the White Tower, with the ghosts? That one is really easy if you've still got the Valean Cube, or extremely hard if you don't have it. Tip: only emerald weapons can harm them. You've still got a brown, red and purple dungeons to go through before the end. ;)

I played lol1 the year it was originally released...;) It was a lot of fun and still is. It is really nice under Win8.1x64 with the Coolsoft VirtualMidiSynth installed and the game's dosbox config set to use it--sounds like a symphony, now. (IMO, P. Stewart is also the voice--slightly disguised--for Tocatta, I believe.) Lol1 was one of the last of the classic 2d rpgs of the era.

Lol2 simply cannot be enjoyed without nGlide 1.02 set for your maximum resolution and the in-game "acceleration" option turned on. IE, it's 3d game and playing under D3d in 2d is nothing but a pixel fest that is truly uuuugly...! But, I like that game, too, although it doesn't have much in common with Lol1 at all. I actually like Lol2 much better now than I did the year it was released, and it was one of the few 3d games I could play with my 3dfx card at the time...;) (In that sense the game was wonderful as we were *starved* for 3d games to play at the time. Running 3d demos all the time got really boring...;))

heh thanks - i'll give it another go the emerald weapon may have been were i was going wrong but i watched a lets play on you tube and the guy commentating was like "this is the part where we just screw the player!" and he was dying countless times! guess its meant to be real hard at that point!

i think i liked this game because of the variety of environments and the story, a lot of games like it at the time were just boring dungeon corridors that all looked the same with little story.

I just beat Lands of Lore 1 for the first time a few hours ago, and I loved every minute of the 19 hours it took me. There were 2 specific times were I had to resort to looking outside the game for a how-to (really bad design choices (one in the caves and the other one on the last level) but other than that it was a very enjoyable experience.

It would be amazing to see Eye of the Beholder series on gog.com as well, so I could replay those games. The second in that series was one of my all-time favorite RPGs back in the day.
