Gotcha: Lands of Lore 1 is what it is. Can't modify graphics settings in that game.
I'd say this statement isn't quite accurate: the game runs in DOSBox, and therefore you do have a few graphical settings to adjust (in the dosboxLOL1.conf file, in this case). The most important one is
scaler in the
render section: it contains scaling method used to stretch the video, and the default value in GOG configs is
normal2x (which simply doubles the size of pixels, whereas most others apply some sort of smoothing filter); IMO, most games tend to look better in
hq2x mode (or
hq3x for the larger screens/smaller original resolutions).
Also,
tv2x and
scan2x modes emulate old TV/CRT screens, which may have nostalgic value for some (and the scanlines also distract the eye from the lack of smoothing in the image).
P.S. With a bit of fiddling, Lands of Lore 1 can be run in ScummVM (because it was made on the engine of Legends of Kyrandia); this gives you basically the same graphical settings as in DOSBox but with an actual GUI (I normally pick "fit to window" + HQ 3x), with an added benefit of supporting both speech and subtitles at once (unlike in the original game). Note: enabling MIDI turns
off music in the game, for some reason.
