What is with the collision detection on the Mausoleum of Giants boss? Fully half of my hits to his face don't register even though it's graphically obvious that it should count as a hit. Of course his attacks always register on me, even when it looks like they should not. Hell, even just touching his inanimate FACE causes you to take damage, WTF? None of the regular enemies have this problem.

This utterly ruins what is otherwise a great game, turning it from "challenging" into merely cheap and frustrating.
You seem to be in same boat as I am!

Sadly, while the puzzles have been nice, the boss design so far has been REALLY bad! =S
There isn't much of tactic to bosses I have met so far, most of them have next to unavoidable random attacks with the control scheme you have. You just have to read FAQs where to find the best possible equipment at the time and trade hits untill the boss dies, seeing videos about this game at least....

I have played games such as Castlevania 1 and Ghosts and Goblins, but it hasn't been THIS bad!

I looked at the classic version bosses and they seemed to work much better. What happened? Weren't they supposed to make this game EASIER and for WIDER AUDIENCE? =S

If you're on the first half, he's immune to thrown weapons, and the axe (if somehow you have it already) hits his hat first. Take it easy, don't get greedy for hits; depending on how much you've explored so far, you've only got so much health. Besides, every hit on any given boss/miniboss gives them a few invincibility frames as well.
You know. Learn his attacks and what not.
If you've triggered the second form, it's both easier and harder. Easier in that the aforementioned immunity is now gone, but harder in that his attacks are now a little more erratic, not to mention it's harder to do the arm climb. Mostly, watch the invincibility frames again.

It's advertised as an "exploration game". So explore! Also, I've played and beat the game several times; there's only one or two bosses that I can describe as have "random/unavoidable" attacks... And it's not anything one faces at this stage of the game.

If you're looking at La-Mulana for an "easy" game... look elsewhere, seriously. Your first run, you will die against the guardians and minibosses, you will get lost, you will wander aimlessly for hours, you will have no clue what you're missing, doing wrong, and so on. Roll with it for a while, take notes, find patterns in some of the clues. You'll figure it out eventually.
It's nothing to do with strategy, it's a poorly programmed hit detection routine. Check out this video at 1:05 and 1:35 to see what I'm talking about. Those attacks should clearly count as a hit. Not my video, so apparently it happens to other people too.
