Is RTK supposed to be played under DOSBox or under a GOG folder w/o DOSBox? I have tried both ways and there doesn't seem to be much difference. Both will crash and I have to reboot.
What about the compatibility choices?
I'm running XP, is the best option WIN 98/WIN ME or WIN 2000 as it suggests?
What about the display - 256 colors?
It also gives the option of running in 640x480 - I usually use 1040x768.
My graphics are really pretty bad - yes, I updated the drivers - NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GT.
I will welcome ANY suggestions, as I would really like to play this game. I played Betrayal at Krondor and it has always been my 2nd favorite RPG (the 1st is Morrowind), but never got around to Return to Krondor. I'm using Direct 3D inside the game.

RTK is a windows 95 game, it is not designed to run under dos.
if you are using compatibility mode, it should be set to win95.
not sure how direct 3d would stack up with RTK, if there is an open gl, that's what i would probably lean towards with games from that time period.
however, it always varied which method worked better from game to game.
i believe the resolution should be as high as you can get it, in game.
what's wrong with the graphics?
are you talking about a specific problem with anomalies?

Thx for your reply.
The graphics are extremely muddly, blurry, dark and hard to see although I have lightened the video

hi, hope you have made some progress by now.
i don't know what else you can do, but i would probably focus on the interaction between your video card and windows, and double check simple stuff to make sure you aren't passing by an obvious solution.
make sure your are not doubling up on your aspect ratio scaling and try different combinations of screen resolution settings,
for instance, try setting your desktop resolution to the exact resolution you have the game running at.
also make sure of you screen scaling. did you set your monitor to scale in it's own menu?
sometimes monitor scaling looks really bad, especially on games designed to look good on a CRT.
i have never owned an nvidia card (not for any specific reason), so i don't know much about your available settings, but ati cards have all kinds of little tweaks in their drivers that can have a big effect on the appearance of older games.
keep in mind that you are basically trying to get your computer to do a bit of a magic trick by making an old game look good on an LCD, so any little setting, like a movie enhancing mode, could have a terrible effect on an older game.
sorry i couldn't be any more specific help.
good luck.
I'd just like to say that I have to trouble at all, except that the videos are just 1/4 of the screen, but the game runs perfect.
Windows 7 64Bit, 1680x1050 LCD, latest NVidia Drivers. No need for any tweaking .
greets,
spellbreaker

I'm running the game on a GF 8600, and the graphics look horrible too. The colours all have a greenish tinge. I've looked up screenshots of RtK on the net and they look nothing like the graphics in my game.
This game was made years ago and I would not expect the game to look like a game that was made today because it was rendered on equipment of yesteryear. In order for the game to have a polished look on computers of today it would have to be rerendered using the technology of today. Also you would have to run it on the machine that it was optimized for to get a very good picture. I glad I still have my DOS machines.
