Sounds like you need a pdf reader.
I personally would not get Adobe. They are loaded with extra junk you don't really need or want if all you want to do is read a pdf.
As a suggestion,
Get Foxit Reader: http://www.foxitsoftware.com/downloads/
Or Sumatra: http://blog.kowalczyk.info/software/sumatrapdf/download-free-pdf-viewer.html
Windows 8 has it's own pdf reader, so you don't really need one if you have Windows 8. If you have Windows 7 or below, you'll need a pdf reader.
