I have never had this problem until just tonight. I attempted to load the game and it asks for a disk and no matter how many time I click ignore, cancel or even the X, the window won't go away and I can't play the game
The copy protection hasn't been fully patched away by GOG - you need an active CD-ROM drive to run the game.
Current Windows version by default disable/hide CD-ROM drives after a while if no medium is present - just open/close the slot or insert any CD/DVD...
If you have no physical CD-ROM drive you might use a virtual/emulated one. Else you need a patched version of the game (or my run-time patch, but the installer is not ready yet).
I don't know what changed it, but right now, it loads fine (and I don't have anything in my CD drive)

If it would pop up again, any CD or DVD would bypass it, just as long as SOMETHING is physically in the drive?

Right now, the spot I'm stuck with is after getting the ax. I've switched between first and third person views, unequipped the weapon, and even made connor walk backwards, and still...it freezes and I don't get control

There is no need to insert a medium, just the drive must be present.

This is a known bug...

If you know how the use a hex-editor, you might try my run-time patch.
(I still didn't had enough spare time to release a newer version with an installer, more/better fixes, and some bugfixes...)

I think I found a solution (atleast it seams to be working for me)

I cleared everything from the DAVENTRY folder (I saw someone mention doing that in a forum) That by itself didn't help me, but if I turn off the lightings options, put away the weapon, go to 3rd person and walk, it loads past the scene
Well, since it is a timing/sequence issue, any "voodoo" that results in different memory allocation patterns could help :)
Let's hope that I find some spare time this year to finish kqmoefix to get rid of this problems.

I hope you do, honestly. Since I posted that, now that I was working with my video recorder to record gameplay for a video walkthrough, now it's back to not letting be past that, no matter what
