Greetings! I'm interested in getting the Kings Quest games, but I have to know:

Are all Kings Quest games their original, unadulterated versions? Will I be able to use my old Roland MT-32 and Roland Sound Canvas for the games and experience all the games have to offer? Also - does Kings Quest V include the floppy version of the game? I myself don't like the voice acting in the game, and the cutscenes also sound awful too (they're essentially poor mono recordings of the Roland MT-32, whereas the floppy version renders out the MIDI - so it sounds better, and no - there's no choice in the matter). Thanks!

Yes, but you may need to play with the DOSBox configuration.

Unfortunately, not.
As mentioned, you'll need to mess with the DosBox config to get your roland mt-32 to work. You'll want to launch dosbox, then type in "mixer /listmidi". Then see what # your mt-32 is assigned to (usually 0 or 1). If you're using a usb to midi cord, it may be listed as the cord's name. Then open the games dosbox config file and add the line "midiconfig=#" (where # is the number your device is assigned to).

You'll also want to edit the games resource.cfg file and make sure soundDrv is set to mt32.drv

Thanks guys, you answered my questions very well. Too bad there's no floppy version of KQ5. I really do hate the talkie version of the game. Guess it's off to Ebay I go. I was only asking because I still have the original Kings Quest Collection (all Kings Quest games plus Laura Bow 1 and 2 and other stuff), but alas - that only includes the talkie too. Ah well.

Your best bet is to buy the King's Quest Collector's Edition (1994, 2 CD's), that version has the French floppy disk version which has the new interface of the talkie version with the Roland-MT32 midi tracks and some added sound effects. The download below will make it default to the English language (it has to be selected in options each time you start otherwise, I've added the English introduction text as well).

Thank you! I'll give it a shot and see what happens.
