What Glide Wrapper do you installed? Do you have a text file in your KQ8 directory called starttxt? If so what does it read?

I got it working...had to use a different graphics mode (now I feel like a dummie, but YAY!)

THANK YOU!!!

salomj: Yes, I even tried reinstalling and starting from scratch no success though.

If I turn off all compatibility settings, it doesn't even get to the splash screen. Current compatibility settings (default):

Disable Desktop Composition
Disable Display Scaling on High DPI Settings

No the starttxt.txt will allow you run on modern systems with changing the compatibility.

Will you please try to change everything back to normal. Meaning do not have any compatibility settings set. Are you running Windows 7 Ultimate 32 or 64 bit? What glide software are you using?

I'm using the Zeckensecks Glide Wrapper.
I've tried with all compatibility setting off and just about every combination of compatibility setting, it still doesn't work.
I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit (x86-64).
You might try dgVoodoo rather than zeckensacks.

However, while I'm not exactly clear what your problem is, it sounds like it might be the cd-rom check issue? It crashes before it even enters the game and gets inside the menu? Do you have a optical drive installed? I think the starttxt.txt file is suppose to fix the crash on load up issue over the cd-drive issue.

But if that's not working, have you tried loading the game with Daemontool's loaded in the background, loading a false drive?

Also I've had problems trying to load the game with directx mode. I find either software (ugly and worst way of playing) or the 3DFX are the only versions that work for me. However, I had to manually set them sometimes within the config file in the game folder (is it a settings or config file? I can't remember exactly). If I try to switch settings between software or 3DFx from within the game, it would often lock up, or go to a black screen IIRC. But no problems manually changing it from outside the game by changing the files.

Also you have a Radeon, you might need to force the game to use Radeon rather than the Intel card. I don't know how to do this as I have Nvidia. However, in the past, I have found that the dedicated card is certainly more reliable than the intel card. Although this game shouldn't push the intel chipset too much.

Yeah, I don't even own an optical drive. It looks like having daemon tools visualize one fixed the issue. Thank you.

Now that I can start the game, I will start messing with the graphic settings. Thanks for the suggestion.

Yeah, with a 3930K I don't think the game will push the processor if I cannot get it onto my graphics card.

You can also try the new installer for KQ8 as well that was released yesterday.

Don't get too excited, they only made a few (mostly useless) changes from what I can see:

-starttxt.txt is added (like it should have been in the first place)
-added an ugly largely unrelated game icon
-added nGlide which has known compatibility issues with the game (crashing, slow menus/dynamic lighting, no 800x600 support; seriously, go use dgvoodoo 2)
-added a useless Application Compatibility Database entry (gog_kq8.sdb; Windows XP and above already include the EmulateGetDiskFreeSpace in the default application compatibility database and this is only ONE of the needed fixes)
-Seems the strange ffdshow registry key seems to be gone now

Don't expect this to fix any problems with it crashing on start if there's no cd-rom drive or the in game lockups on certain scenes.
I concur, DgVoodoo2 works the best. They definitely need to switch to that.
