Artemis_E: Im playing games mostly at work, so i really need that Alt+tab working well.

This game changes resolution of whole system..... damn will be hard to play;p

DCT: They had to do that or else you would have a tiny space surrounded by a giant block of black border.
Offering a windowed option would negate this need. It is a shame, for sure.

Yes but you can't offer what was never coded into the game in the first place and given that the source code is lost forever there is no way for the creator to code/patch it in.

nadia911: Use this software:
http://corz.org/windows/software/accessories/KDE-resizing-moving-for-XP-or-Vista.php
That software works for every window but KoDP, I'm sad to say.
I've actully always played this game in a windowed mode. The CD version automatically lauched the game in a windowed mode for me on Win 98 and Win Xp. Unfortunately I can't get the GOG version to work on Win 7 on either windowed or full screen mode.
high rated
I've got a solution: Run the game with the command line parameter "-w" (simply add it in the desktop link).

The game starts windowed, the resolution is still set to somewhat low - but since you can access your desktop now, simple set it back to your normal res. The game stays windows; just drag its window a bit larger to see the whole screen.

Worked for me, Win7 64bit running on 1080p.

Now go raid for some cattle. And be nice to the ducks :P

Those ducks can be a bunch of d***s though.
I didnt tried but maybe if you want to give it a try i think under linux wine you can use it in windowed mode :)
Opening a shortcut and under Target putting this in:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\GOGcom\King of Dragon Pass\KoDP.exe" -w

worked for me. I just switched my resolution back to my desktop resolution and now I don't have stretched graphics.

Go to the compatibility mode tab and disable the "Run in 640 x 480 screen resolution" checkbox and it won't change resolution on startup anymore.

The "Compatibility mode" setting for the 640 X 480 keeps on checking back all the time. No, the file is not read-only. I uncheck the box, save, and when I edit the properties of the EXE file, it's checked again.

WTF?

I've done that change on my desktop shortcut and it's stayed unchecked, maybe try that instead of the actual exe file?

I've done that. It checks itself back. That's why I'm so puzzled. I have admin privileges too. I'm just baffled.

Try to create a shortcut and uncheck the resolution there
Any way to get windowed mode centered properly? At least for me top and left have unneccessary black areas which means that I have to keep the window fairly large to see the actual game.

This comes a tad late almost 2 1/2 years later, but I was having the same issue and after a great deal of searching discovered the problem.

There's a registry entry that's responsible for this.

(As always, beware editing the registry, you can destroy Windows, etc.)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Layers\C:\(Install Directory)\(Game Directory)\KODP.exe

By default it's set to "640X480 DISABLETHEMES DISABLECICERO DISABLEDWM HIGHDPIAWARE RUNASADMIN"

I deleted everything except "RUNASADMIN." After this, I was able to make changes to the Compatibility section and make them stick.

Combined with jerfa's post in this thread I'm now able to play the game, windowed, without having to manually change the screen resolution afterward.
