justanoldgamer: I can confirm that logitech drivers are an issue. I was only able to start the game after disabling my logitech mouse and joystick drivers. Unfortunately I bought the game this summer and only now tried to play it so I cannot get a refund.

The gamecard should indicate that the game is not compatible with Logitech devices.

MisterRavenicus: Both my keyboard and mouse are Logitech, is there anyway I can disable them both and then somehow re-activate them without a mouse or keyboard, after starting the game? Or is the issue Logitech things being active at all while the game is running?
Check your system tray (the part at the right of the task bar where the time and volume control reside) for something called Logitech profiler or similar and exit from them. Once that is done, you computer will use the generic keyboard and mouse drivers. This means that you will loose extra functionality like programmable keys and buttons.
i fixed mine... by using windows 7 compatibility mode... turn off everything in the properties
Just bought it on sale. Was looking forward to this as well. And...same problem. Load it up, changes my resolution to 640x480 and then doesn't load. Have messed with all of the Compatibility options (got it to stop changing resolution), but it still won't load.

Have a Win 8 x64 system. And a Logitech wireless mouse and keyboard. Unfortunately I haven't been able to find a way to disable it. (There is no system tray on Win 8 as was suggested earlier.)

Anyone else able to get it to work on Win 8?

[EDIT] Okay, I've tried all of the Compatibility options. None of them work. As far as I know I don't have any Logitech software running for my mouse or keyboard. When I try to run it, it will show up in the task manager.

OK so I have confirmed that:

1) Disabling Logitech's Setpoint allowed me to run the game after experiencing the problem described in the thread's title.
2) Disabling all of the compatibility options, like run in 640x480 resolution, actually made the game loook better for me.

Same OS, same situation here -except for the Logitech software-. The game will never run and becomes a background process in the task manager. I am about to ask for a refund. I tried everything mentioned in this thread.
UPDATE: Found a fix. I just closed the Gamestop App by sheer chance -it had finished downloading a game I purchased there a couple of years ago-, which is an application they use for Impulse Driven games -Gamestop's digital download service- and everything works perfectly fine now!!

It was obviously the culprit because I was trying to play the game over and over again and had Gamestop App visible in a window (not only a background process) but since it hadn't finished downloading I didn't close it and never thought it could cause that.

Thing is, realised the download had finished and decided to close the Gamestop App. So I returned to my previous task, which was getting this game to run. And it worked at the first try without me doing anything once the Gamestop App wasn't there anymore!

I was feeling desperate and about to ask for a refund. But the game runs on Windows 8.1 Update 1 without a hitch, at least for me. Uninstalling Gamestop App now, I don't need it anymore.

EDIT: Remember to add the -w line to the target option after creating a shortcut to the game, so you can play it in windowed mode. It should look similar to this: "C:\GOG Games\King of Dragon Pass\KoDP.exe" -w

Enjoy this wonderful game.

FYI for people having the same issue but any of the previously mentioned things don't work: I had the same exact problem, running Windows 8 64 bit. Try to launch game, changes resolution to 640x480, game doesn't start, but there is a background process running for the game. I quit skype, and the game works fine now.
I had the "resolution changes, but game doesn't launch" issue.

I shut down all the cloud services, teamviewer, and other utilities, then shut down all the processes in Task Manager that felt unnecessary.

I also added the "-w" to run in windowed mode, as described above. And turned off all compatibility options in the right-click properties 'Compatibility' tab.

And the game launched.

So... no simple list of thing to do. But clearly some processes can interfere with the launch, and an energetic spirit of inquiry can get the game running.

Thanks to all the upstream comments that encouraged me to persist in brute force.

thanx, i tried it just a minute ago :
unfortunately it did not work on my win XP 32 bits ServicePack 3
I also tried the usual stuff: make a profile in the nvidia and disable stuff, bit by bit then retrying, all to no avail, also tried all the compatibility settings, nothing works.

It switches to 640x480 at 60 hz then it 'dies' alt tab to taskmanagers shows the kodp process of kodp
killing it restored the resolution switching it back to the default 1024x768 at 85hz
So i guess its back to the drawingboard and i will have to try something else.
Most of the older games work without a problem, HOMM 3 complete works without having to 'play' with any settings
so i hope i will find a working solution.
I bought the game yesterday during the action so it was cheaper, but i would like to see it work :D
i am curious about the game :D

Have you tried to change color quality from 32 to 16?
Been trying all those tips attempting to make this wonderful game run on my Win 8.1 tablet, but no luck though. The new version is available on the Apple store and on Android, but Windows tablet users aren't as lucky just yet.

Also read through this thread. The game engine does not like any number of programs running in the background.

okay, so i should try and 'shoot off' some background programs?
well i still use my XP cause it accepts a lot of old retail games aswell, i do have win 7 but thats 64 bit.

my win XP already runs with the minimum of background processes, cause i disabled lots of 'redundant'; processes, it looks like my XP now runs at the minimum of process that are needed, don't think i can kill anymore process without Xp shutting down. :D

I do have KAV (kaspersky) and a MBAM (malware anti malware) running.
I could try disable them but somehow i dont think that would be the solution.

So i guess i will try the resolution tips and the colour depths : 16/32 bit

Thanx fo the info

Still worth a try disabling KAV & MBAM. I don't remember having issues running it on my XP SP3 machine. It wouldn't hurt shooting GOG a support ticket. Perhaps there's a known issue with your setup?

The game runs just fine on win 7 x64 by the way.

i tried all: 16/32 bits disabling everything like kav and MBAm, nothing works
i bought it at sale so the pain is a bit less, still sad i cant see the game in action.
my old xp runs games even older then kod, so i guess kodp is just one of those games that turns your hair grey before you can get it to work :D
Ah nevermind ...

Whats sad is that i cant get past the sanitarium video, the game crashes, i finally got it to work (had tot disable a lot)
so i guess i will search for the solutions in the forum to get to chapter 3 on sanitarium.

So for now all games work flawlessy with kodp being the odd one out.
