There's some comments on gog regarding data mining under the new EULA. I can't post there thus I ask here. Is there DRM on this game?

Phoning back home & DRM are two different things, therefore the title of this thread is misleading; the GOG version of KSP is DRM-Free, meaning you don't need an active internet connection to be able to install the game once you've downloaded the installers, neither does this version feature some third-party code that stop you from installing in more than one PC, apply an installation limit or anything else modern DRM usually does. BUT, as with nearly all Unity games, it does collect telemetry and sends the data to some remote server. What data is that? I'm not sure so i can't say exactly, but if you're concerned about your privacy, you can set your firewall to block all outgoing traffic from KSP. Also, as far as i remember, there is an option to do that from inside of the KSP options (not sure if this applies to v1.4). Personally, if i was using Windows to connect to the internet, i would be much more concerned about my privacy than i'd be with a Unity game. ;)

I hate posting here. no matter what I say, I'm wrong and there's something worse that I'm doing so I should shut the fuck up, right? This thing spies on people. call that what you will, I call it an intrusion into my life. I'll call it malware put on us without warning by gog. Gog will not give me a refund. they say the game works. I say it works as a spy, and I didn't pay money to be spied on and used as a cash cow for some crappy company.

As far as windows or other software goes, what's your point? the world has gone to hell so, we just need more sunscreen? I think this is very wrong. Why bring up windows? you don't know my configuration. You don't know how long I've had computers in my home. you know nothing about me, but you assert that you do. I like my privacy. Not DRM by definition then it's malware and you don't know what data it's collecting and for what purpose. I shouldn't have to do anything to my firewall because I bought a game. Games should not spy on people. GOG should warn customers that they promote and sell software that spies on us while telling us how cool they are for not adding DRM, A game should be a game. Not a spy in your home.

I think I should have a right to voice my concerns and to ask questions without being attacked. Obviously gog and you disagree.

In common with just about every Unity game out there, KSP does send some telemetry information. If you don't want this, you can place the game behind an outgoing Application Firewall rule.

KSP does not have DRM, however. You can zip up your own backup copy, run it on a non-connected computer, put multiple copies on your machine for your own use (and when running modified, that's frankly recommended), and there are no locks in place to prevent you.

This escalated quickly.

Vythonaut's post has been edited and maybe my memory is playing tricks on me but I don't remember it being inflammatory in it's original form either. It's a methodical and factual explanation. Good post, really. The joke about windows is obviously in jest about computers in general, not an assumption about you personally.

I don't know what the developers of KSP uses Unity telemetry for, but from what I understand it's an engine feature that lets developers know which kind of hardware their games are being run on and it can report how players are behaving in game. Perhaps they want to know how their new expansion is doing and not just rely on anecdotal evidence from player testimonies.

As has been explained in this thread, you can block this traffic and it wont limit your ability to play the game. The answer to the second part of your original question is still no, the game does not have any form of DRM. I don't know what kind of information they are collecting through the Unity Analytics/telemetry however, so the first part of your question is still not answered in this thread.

Can't blame them. I already gave you at least one legit way to block all outgoing traffic from KSP to it's remote servers and it is what GOG support would also advise you, if they didn't do it already. And where exactly did i do this? I've not install KSP. After seeing no manual, I came here to see what people were saying about where this might be. I don't want to ask because this is what happens. then I found the EULA thread and stopped messing with it until I found out what this was. I tried to post there but it would not allow it. so, asked here. and again, due to all the static I get for asking here, another game I own that has a bunch of negativity attached to it.

Thank you for taking the time to explain this and for the link! Now I wonder how many games I have that use this engine or another method to accomplish the same objective (do we know what that is, really?) I think of Slitherine games like panzer corp and OOP that pull adds off the net for other Slitherine games on the start menu. I wonder..
