I don't know if I'm the only one having a problem with this, but here goes.
The game runs fine, the sound is good, and the video is great...but whenever I click on save or restore, the game crashes. Has anyone else had this problem?

Longcat: Sweet. Going to try it out later tonight:)

Yep, XP mode in Virtual PC worked for me as well, so at least you are able to play and save until it's fixed for Win7/Vista.
I was under the impression that xp compatibility mode on win 7 was the solution.
There's no way I'm letting any virtual pc near my system:P
Yeah, but I'd rather not use a virtual box to play. The point of GoG is also to allow me to run classic games natively on modern PCs, so I will also hold off until it is fixed...
I wish someone from GoG would at least acknowledge this, or send me an email back... or something... just so I know that they know what's going on....

No, XP mode, the XP Professional image (with license) that users with 7 Ultimate or Pro can get for free from microsoft., and yes, it uses VPC
It's a no hassle download/install process and works really well. You even get shortcuts to the apps you install on the XP VM on your W7 start menu.
Don't know what your problem with Virtual Pc is, but i've been running a Windows 98SE VM with it on one of my XP desktops and never had any problems with it, and i was able to play many games on it that absolutely refused to work on XP.
XP mode for Win 7 is even more polished. It works equally well and it has the nice shortcuts and folders on the host OS to the stuff installed on the guest OS.
Edit: Mind you, this is a just an option untill gog does its thing, like eveybody else on this thread i also want a proper fix.

For those of us who have Windows 7 Pro and 7 Ultimate use XP Mode. It works fine.
For those of us who have VISTA, install MS Virtual PC 2007 SP1 and then install Windows XP Home or Pro. Also install the Additions to Virtual PC that's included in the MENU. Then install the game.
I have tested this in both environments and works perfect. Let us know if you experience any issues.
PS: For better performance, disable Windows Visual, Restore Points, and Automatic Updates. A suggestion would also be to after the virtual machine is installed, SHUTDOWN, go to the Virtual PC settings and enable UNDO DISK support. So if something goes wrong, you can just delete the changes and you have a fresh install of windows.
Enjoy the game.

Ah, WIn7 Pro user here, completely forgot about downloading / installing XP mode. WIsh they would've bundled it, but hey, as good a time as any to grab it. Thanks for the idea!
For those of us without Pro or Ultimate, I doubt we want to use that option. If GOG would at least accept the fact that this is true... EVERYBODY SEND TICKETS
Um... Also, they never guaranteed compatibility with Win 7. Even so, this is silly. Its probably a misspelling in the code somewhere!
GET IT FIXED, GOG!

But they guarantee compatibility on Vista... which has the exact same issue.

Did not know that.
At any rate, I'm using VirtualBox and the copy of XP I have lying around to get around this issue. In the process of installing XP now.

GOG already employs virtual boxes to run games, especially older DOS titles (using DOSBox, for example). The idea of running older games "natively" is a bit odd in that for any significantly older game to function properly its various instructions need to be processed through one compatibility layer or another - some are just more obvious / extensive. What GOG generally does is acquire licenses and bundle apps with the appropriate technology to run them under a modern OS using compatibility tools like interpreters and virtual boxes; there are seldom actual recompiles here.
That said, the beauty of GOG (beyond the licenses and game availability) is that the work is always done for you, and all you need to do is double-click the game to launch it. Hopefully we'll see some movement on the BIT issue this week; I'm lucky I ended up with Win 7 Pro or I'd be SOL too.

Saving and loading works just fine for me here on Vista64. I did a normal install to the default directory.
However, I have turned Aero completely off and am using the "Windows Standard" Theme. I guess that helps. You can change this by:
Right Click on Desktop -> "Personalize" -> "Window Color and Appearance" -> "Open classic appearance properties for more color options" -> "Windows Standard"
Edit: Hmm, that's not it, because when I turn Aero on the game runs, restores and saves just fine.
Other things I have done to my Vista (I play lots of old games and do some coding and all of the following make life easier but also less safe, so don't try this unless you know exactly what you are doing):
-I have administrator rights
-I have turned UAC completely off
-I took ownership of the "Program Files (x86)" folder
-I am using "Test Mode" (probably unrelated to this game)
Just checking: Do you have the following things checked in the Compatibility tab for the shortcut:
-Run this Program in compatibility mode for Windows95
-Run in 640x480 screen resolution
-Disable visual themes
-Disable desktop composition

All of these things are checked on my vista laptop (and WIn 7, but for apples-to-apples comparisons let's just forget that for now) with no luck. I'm still pretty wedded to our earlier conclusion that the crash is caused by the director application trying to call up an old-timey open/save dialog box, but I confess I'm at a loss as to why it works for you :(

Yeah, it's pretty bizzare. I definitely get a standard Windows 95 style open/save dialog box, NOT a Vista style one. Perhaps this is an optional dynamic library on Vista and not all installs come with it or there are variations of that file? But then it should be possible to locate the necessary file.
I'm not really familiar how Windows handles dialog boxes. I hope they are just dynamic libraries.
I'll try it with process explorer this evening, if dialog boxes are indeed handled as dynamic libraries I can then tell you the name of the called library, that should help.
If not, is there a debugger that shows system calls like that?
Edit: Ha, it seems they are indeed DLLs:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_API
In that case a fix should be very easy, just place a copy of a DLL (from a Vista version that works) in the same folder as the game executable. Of course this means sharing a copy of a copyrighted Microsoft software, which is not exactly legal...
Post edited July 05, 2010 by Lafazar
Huh. If the dialogue box is indeed the issue, then you shouldn't even need that dll. Find the new dll, and have the game reference that instead!
I don't think its changeable without access to source code.

Okay, here is the output from process explorer:
I bolded the "Common Dialog Box Libraries"
(Wikipedia: Provides applications the standard dialog boxes for opening and saving files, choosing color and font, etc. The library resides in a file called commdlg.dll on 16-bit Windows, and comdlg32.dll on 32-bit Windows. It is grouped under the User Interface category of the API.)

Lafazar: Okay, here is the output from process explorer:
I bolded the "Common Dialog Box Libraries"
(Wikipedia: Provides applications the standard dialog boxes for opening and saving files, choosing color and font, etc. The library resides in a file called commdlg.dll on 16-bit Windows, and comdlg32.dll on 32-bit Windows. It is grouped under the User Interface category of the API.)

Good legwork on that! Sadly, we should all have the commdlg.dll file; I know I do, and alas, nothing. BIT, what are you doing?!
