I don't know if I'm the only one having a problem with this, but here goes.
The game runs fine, the sound is good, and the video is great...but whenever I click on save or restore, the game crashes. Has anyone else had this problem?

soulsqueez: Well, back in 2004 they were having the same problem according to this website:
http://www.tommyyune.com/forum/messages/13/23.html?WednesdayOctober420060800am
They fixed it by editing the JMAN.ini file but I can't seem to find that file in the Journeyman directory. In their case it was a simple edit where "BasePath=\" was supposed to be BasePath=C:\(game dir).
I'm not sure if a similar thing is happening here since I'm sure GOG has changed the files to run on a modern OS.

thanks for following up. Gotta love those old school .ini and .cfg files. I guess we are just waiting on Gog to follow up. I have Red Dead Revolver on the 360, but I am more interested in reliving the good ol days through BIT...

arionfrost: Come on GOG! A little feedback would be much appreciated. Still have not been able to really play this game, as the crash is pretty much game breaking.
From Presto's now defunt webpage:
<i>
Installation Troubleshooting - Windows Version
Go to the Run line and type D:\BITSETUP.EXE where D is the letter of the your CD ROM. The game installs into a program group called Buried In Time. The default install directory is C:\BITMPC.
There have been a few isolated instances in which the installation may not properly expand files to the hard drive. During installation, BIT attempts to copy the following files into the BITMPC directory:
BIT2416.EXE
BIT24LIB.DLL
BIT816.EXE
BIT8LIB.DLL
BITMPC.EXE
BIT_W95.WRI
DEMOHELP.EXE
GUNDAM.ICO
JMAN.ICO
JMAN2.ICO
LION.ICO
README.WRI
WAIL16.DLL
Enter the Windows File Manager and navigate to the BITMPC directory. If the files listed above do not appear in your BITMPC directory, navigate to your WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory and look for these files again. If you still do not see these files, skip to the Manual Installation section of this document.
You can select multiple files in the File Manager by clicking the left mouse button on the file name while holding down the CTRL key. Make sure to select ONLY the files listed above. When all of the listed files have been highlighted, press the F7 key to move these files. In the "To:" box, type in the path leading to the BITMPC directory (C:\BITMPC in most cases) and click the OK button. Once the files have been moved, exit the File Manager and double-click on the Buried In Time icon to run the game.
Manual Installation:
On some systems, a Manual Installation of BIT may be necessary. The following steps should get you through the installation.
Make sure you have Windows loaded and CD #1 of BIT in your CD-ROM drive.
Open up the Windows MAIN group and double-click the MS-DOS Prompt icon.
Use the EXPAND command to copy files from the CD to your hard drive. Use the following command as an example:
EXPAND -R D:\*.* C:\BITMPC
In the example, D: is the CD-ROM drive letter, and C:\BITMPC is the location of the BITMPC directory on the hard drive. You may need to alter these items if the drive letters are different on your system.
After using the EXPAND command, you need to rename some of the files. Use the following commands:
REN C:\BITMPC\*.EX *.EXE
REN C:\BITMPC\*.DL *.DLL
REN C:\BITMPC\*.IC *.ICO
Again, as with the EXPAND command, C:\BITMPC is the location of the BITMPC directory on your hard drive. You may need to alter this item if the drive letter is different on your system.
After the files have been renamed, type EXIT and press the Enter key. This should return you to Windows. You can run BURIED IN TIME by double-clicking on the icon.

I am really bored at work, so I am scouring the net at work for a solution to this problem. I have the feeling the game is crashing because it is looking for a directory that doesn't exist. Can someone try this?
Create a directory on your drive:
C:\BITMPC
Then copy everything from the gog buried in time game directory here. My netbook is at home and I can't test it to see if it works or not.
For someone reading this that doesn't have the crash problem, what default directory does the game look to for saving and loading?
Let's get this fixed asap. This gamebreaker is forcing me from indulging in childish bliss. Thanks.

Tried this. Didn't work. Good idea, though.
Windows 7, save game (only 1 slot?) crashes. Jeez, GOG, did you even test this thing before taking our cash?
I guess I should have come to the forum first before throwing away 6 dollars.

Easy man, it'll get fixed, just a matter of time. This game is worth your $6 and more.

Relax, be patient, issues like this have come up before and GoG always fixes it up. :)
EDIT: Arion you beat me to it :P

I ended up picking up the game last night and the game also crashes for me on Save/Restore.
Haven't looked much into it but it doesn't seem fixable at our end. I already sent my ticket to support, waiting for a reply.
What is the status on this? Good lord i wanna play this over the weekend...

Nothing yet I'm afraid.
Hi, I haven't Windows7, so I can't be of much help, but I thought of something if You want to try it.
It most likely won't work but who knows :D
With administrator account:
- Run regedit (start->run -> "regedit")
- GO TO: "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Presto Studios\Buried in Time\1.1"
Once there, there is a Variable called "Last Saved Game Path" that should be empty.
You can try to put something there, like the path to the game, that is, the same that is written in "Install Directory" variable. Don't forget the last \
Have you tried this?
Kind regards
Hi again, sorry for the last message XD. I was in a hurry and I can't edit because I can't log with my user where I am now (I don't remember the password XD). Oh, and sorry for the spelling mistakes of the other message, OH BOY :/.

Hi, I don't have Windows 7, so I can't be of much help, but I thought of something that you might try, well, It most likely won't work but who knows :D
With administrator account:
- Run regedit (start->run -> and type "regedit" (without the ") and click OK)
- GO TO: "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Presto Studios\Buried in Time\1.1"
Once there, there is a field called "Last Saved Game Path" that should be empty.
You can try to put something there (double click to change the content of the field), like the path to the game, that is, the same thing that is written in the "Install Directory" field just above. Don't forget the last \, that is important
anyone tried this already?
Well, after writting this message twice if it doesn't work.. sorry XD
Kind regards

Just tried this, no luck. :(
Thanks for trying though!
:(, sorry to hear that Gamerkought, I hope there is a solution soon

i don't get it...if the game crashes on saves and restores the game must actually save the game before it crashes or else how would it crash trying to restore a save...right? that said, if it crashes trying to restore a save, how do you EVEN PLAY IT!? :-) you start from the beginning each time?
and last but not least, if this problem is widespread occurring on Win7, Vista, 32 and 64 bit and GOG doesn't seem to be doing a thing about it (they never answer my email either...(jerks)), how does it get a 5 star rating from 92 people?
so help me here: should i buy this or is it flawed?

I'd say wait to buy it until it's fixed, since you won't be able to use it anyway, most likely. But I wouldn't take it out on GOG - generally they have pretty good service, and I'd imagine they're working on it right now. Don't know why they certified it as Vista compatible, though, since this seems to be happening to just about everyone - I wonder if they skipped a stage of playtesting. And yeah, for the moment all you can do is try to play through it in one straight session, which is... unappealing, to say the least.
It isn't saving or restoring anything. The problem, we think, is that the game is attempting to open an old-school file manager dialog, which is somehow crashing the game to the OS; this is why it happens for both load and save functions, as it's essential the same dialog. BIT was built on old Macromedia technology, if I recall correctly, and only GOG knows what sort of crazy obsolete calls those libraries are trying to make.

When press escape at the main start screen, one of the win 95 style windows pops up asking you if you want to quit the game. I agree with you, the game is probably looking for a specific windows function, and when it doesn't find it, it crashes.
