How am i suppoesed to know where i am? I went up for 10 minutes and noticed no change in the map. I have no idea where i am, where im going, or what im supposed to do.

I have exactly the same problem. I see the maps but they do not show my position on them.

Maybe this is intentional?

Thats how it supposed to be.
Only use of the map is to check if you have cleared the area or if there are any items and locations to get.
