wpegg: I'm not understanding the hate here. From the look of the trailer video there, and the dev diary, it sounds like they're trying to build up a decent remake of the original game, features mostly in tact, and the spirit of the game unchanged. Ok, so it's not turn based. I suspect the original wouldn't have been if they had the choice. UFO made the transistion pretty well, and JA's combat system was blatantly inspired by UFO.
I'm looking forward to it. It looks like they've put a lot of work into it, while trying to keep the original's feel. Certainly doesn't look like a sell out.
Most of the hate is because while JA:BIA may be a good game, so far we haven't seen anything that makes it JA. Where's the merc personality, where's the tactical decisions, where the TBS that defined JA? This game so far looks like a (possibly) good real time with pause shooter, that had a brand name slapped on it for the additional sales it would give them. There have been some tries to make a successor to JA, some successful, some less so, but so far BitComposer seems to ignore what the fans were asking/suggesting/demanding, thus the hate. I think at one time there was a mass banning from their forums as well, when the fans started complaining about the the real time combat.
Still, only time will tell how good a game JA:BIA will be.
hercufles: well time only can say, well to be honest whats great about turn based is you have more time planning and posining i think if its real time i would screw up :)
Real Time with Pause. That means that anytime you want (or a trigger like seeing a new enemy happens), the game will pause and allow you to issue orders again, if needed. The UFO series (Aftermath, Afterlight and Aftershock) are a good example of that gameplay, even though they do lack a lot in the tactical depth of it.
