just downloaded and installed the game twice now. file integrity before install works fine as usual, install goes through normally, but then when i try to launch the game the screen goes black, i hear a sound clip, and then nothing. i have to use task manager to close ja2 or else i can't do anything. i've seen some suggestions to try and patch to 1.13 and edit the ini file, but for some reason i dont have an ja2.ini nor does the patch seem to do anything. any ideas?


edit: after installing 1.13 i get an error message stating i'm missing bink32.dll from my computer and to reinstall the game..

apparently it's a problem with windows 8 and 7zip. if you try to extract files to a directory where it has to overwrite files (like most patches do with games), then 7zip won't bother overwriting the files even though it asks you to do so. i ended up extracting the patch to a new folder on my desktop, then from there i copy/pasted the files into my ja2 directory and it worked fine. extracted the patch to the ja2 directory since it's just replacing the ja2.exe file, and it worked like a charm! i'm not sure if anyone else on windows 8 is running into the same problems, but if they are this may be a viable solution as i seem to recall this happening to other games i've had to update manually.

The Game works now.its about time. I had to open JA2_113 FullRelease_English_4870, JA2_113_Patch_English_4870 and JA2_113_UpdateForRelease4870_English (all 3) into the GOG Game Jagged Alliance, taking the original download and install of about 800mb to now 1.3gb. File increased is size by a lot!! Whats up with that? GOG shouldn't sell people games where this much bullshit is involved. Glad I didn't pay for it!!!

Well, the extra size increase is due to the 1.13 patch. It does add the graphics of UB and Wildfire, along with the merc voices for that, and a lot of gun graphics. If you only wish to run the game, grab this, which I'm not sure if it's included in the hotfixes or not.

DOS-games shouldn't have a problem running in a window.
As far as I know you need the 1.13 mod to be able to run JA2 in window mode.

why that the latest installer does not include patch?

What latest installer, and what patch?

GOG's installers include all official patches, which go up to 1.12
1.13 is an unofficial patch which has 2 main branches. The stable one, which is currently at 4870 + bugfix and the svn one which is currently at 61xx. The svn does have a few installers available, but it also has a ton of new features that haven't been thoroughly tested, thus it is more bug-ridden than the stable.
Both versions of 1.13 should include the needed dll files.

Also, for those who didn't look in the linked thread at the bottom of the post, you have to do this:
"5, Now open properties on ja2.exe and in Compatibilty check
5a, Run in XP SP3 mode
5b, Reduced color mode, 16bit mode
5c, Run as Administrator."

Just downloaded it and I had the same problem. The fix above worked but I have to say this is pretty shoddy for GoG not to have updated the game six months after this problem was reported.

Its an awfully convoluted solution to a problem that GoG could easily fix them selves with a few tweaks of the installer package.

If u have win8 & want to play ja2 (best of the best TBS, in my opinion) just download my archive ( http://sendfile.su/864246 )& unpack it on game directory (near .exe file).

It helps both ja2 - vanilla & wildfire (& 1.13 , of course).
