Hey. I have spent a lot of time on this and come to the following conclusions:
IPX - I couldn't get IPX working with Kali on XP (but I had no one to test with), and IPX is NOT AVAILABLE for Windows 7. May be the only way to get Nitro Pack working online, but no proof is available.
Tunngle -
DOWNLOAD LINK - Tunngle works best (doesn't work for Nitro Pack) and we have gotten 5 people connected to a game at the same time just fine. Install Tunngle, go to the same chat room within Tunngle, and when you create/join the game in I'76, use the host's Tunngle IP address as the Server IP requested from you in I'76. Everyone must have the same version of I'76 (If you have the clean CD install of I'76, you can't join someone's game who is using I'76 that's been Gold patched, and vice versa.)
My original post on online play I'76 Original vs I'76 Gold vs Nitro Pack - We could not get Nitro Pack working using ANY method, but we were able to play I'76 Gold (the GOG.com version of I'76 original is upgraded to Gold by default, there is no way to downgrade it.) As far as using Addon maps for I'76 Gold, you will find that your addon maps from I'76 clean install don't work anymore! wtf! Here is my post on how to get them working:
HOW TO GET ADDON MAPS WORKING FOR I'76 GOLD. (Basically you can only use Nitro Pack maps, and you have to renamed the .CBT or .RAC file to .LVL and add it to the miss8, miss16, and addon folders) And here is a link to the maps:
Lightfoot's Stolen Maps. If you don't want to rename each file by yourself (takes a while), I just released an
I'76 Gold Map Pack here.
Glide vs Direct3D vs Software - Software looks awful. Glide looks great and is fairly easy to get working correctly and glitch-free (even on Windows 7), however, I experience frequent crashing issues when playing online using Glide mode (on XP and Win7). Direct3D mode is not as sexy as Glide, but it is a hell of a lot better than software, even if it does make your menus hot pink. In conclusion: I use Glide when playing single-player (along with a CPU throttler to help with the wheel wobble glitch), and I stick with D3D mode when playing online. Direct3D mode can be enabled by adding -d3d to to the end of your I'76 shortcut.
And last of all, we have an email list of people that have I'76 Gold up and working on Tunngle. Email me at tvoyles@gmail.com to join us. We hardly ever play but we need more active members.
