I have the blacksmith quest to find the Hammer... I think I'm in the right area.. (talking wall that kills me, lots of pillars, and 4 platforms ... three active that gave me experience and so forth...)

The hammer is in the Devil Cavern area... supposed to be outside in the trees... I found two buried places, one by the wall that kills me... but I can't open it yet. One in the trees, but no hammer.

Is the hammer in this area... Does the Devil Cavern quest need to be "opened" before I can find it.

Hey, what a coincidence, I just found the hammer and read your post here.
Sorry though, I don't know whether you need to open the Devil Cavern quest or not (but I don't think so and I don't even know what quest you meant), so I just tell you where I found it.

I found the hammer under a stone beside a tree.
If you see your map it is directly south of the cave's entrance and just left on a tree's picture. A little more detail, it is just a little east when you arrive at Devil's Cavern from the world map, above one of spider's nest and just right of a tree. There should be some big rocks and there is a little rock than can be clicked. If the item location isn't random, you should find the hammer there as I did.

Oh you haven't discovered the Devils Cavern yet? Now I get it what you mentioned earlier about pillars and platforms. You were on Pagan Temple, weren't you? No, it's not there.

Devils Cavern has its own map, on the world map it should be on the north of Forum and east of Glatzburg. If it doesn't exist on your map, then yes maybe you haven't opened another quest that trigger the place to be appeared.

I'm sorry I can't be sure which one the quest is. But maybe you didn't have really talked with all of the NPCs in Glatzburg. First time I arrived on Glatzburg, I talked everything with all of NPCs in Glatzburg, east side and west side. After that, when I go to the world map, I got many new locations including Devils Cavern.

I just checked my quest journal. The only one that mentions Devils Cavern is a quest given from Grand Duke Heidrick. Maybe it's the one? He should be inside a house on east side of Glatzburg. If it's not, then try to talk to every NPCs again about everything, maybe someone else will give its information to you. I don't remember about it, sorry..

I think I've got a bug.... I talked to everyone... everywhere.... east and west... did some additional quests. Talked to everyone... and I mean EVERYONE, again.... no Devil's Cavern...

I'll play as much as I can and then go play Ultima or a Might and Magic again... Life's too short to mess with this much longer.

From the link given by bavuong236, maybe you didn't arrest Alphonso and he ran away so you didn't get information regarding Devils Cavern from him, I'm afraid that will be permanent. But if you do caught and tortured him and still can't find the place then maybe true that's a bug.
