There's a girl's body there and I can pick it up and store it in my inventory. Question is whether it's necessary or just something taking up space?

your going to need it for the end of act 1, i suggest you dump the body in the middle of the first town until you need it for evidence, i held onto all throughout act 1 total waste of space

In fact I just now went back to the inn of the first town and dumped a bunch of stuff I've been saving up into the chest there on the second floor. I have a ton of scrolls that I can't scribe yet and specialty potions I'll probably never use yet can't seem to sell. Suffice to say I actually have space now! :P

Nope, it won't. I even put them for a long while in the tree stumps until I managed to successfully pick and disarm the chest in the inn :)
