I'm no beginner.
I have done all the X-Wing / Tie Fighter series.
I have even finished the firs Glynn Williams game on Amiga (Warhead).

But wow, can't even finish the 1st real mission in I-War 1 (Gatekeeper).
I must have missed something.

One on one easy, one on two easy (most of the time) but when there is more than 2 enemies attacking me, 3 hits and i'm done (ship disable, easy target).

I have seen vidéos of people finishing easily this mission, but the gunstars seems much more efficient.
When i play this mission, the gunstars (even when 3 are online) doesn't help me much.

The worst part is, I know, that it's the beginning of the game, so it's going to be much harder.
When you restart a mission 20 times with no improvement, something is wrong.

Of course I could play Arcade instead of Simulation, but I don't like the idea, I want to play the real thing.

May be I'm just bad...

Edit
Finally did it, but for the 1st real mission, I still think it's pretty hard.
I can easily understand how people less passionate oubout this kind of game could have drop it...

Some time ago I managed to play through that mission. I would wait right behind the l-point and take out their thrusters right as they jumped through(I still managed to get my ship disabled many times).

That is one of the harder missions, there might be a few harder ones in late game, but the next few are easier.
Hi,

Forget about xwing/wingcommander type- they are not 'real'space sims, if you know what I mean,

The gatekeeper is quite difficult, so you are doing ok..

I've got some hints for you:

1. This one is quite obvious, use speed to your advantage
2. Use all your weapons (don't forget missles and REM missles, and figthers in some missions)
3. Use the power triangle. If you need speed, move to green, if weapons red, shields are quite useless if you are outnumbered.
4. Keep trying! The game is worth it!!!

Ripple fire missiles at different enemies. Waiting behind the jump point isn't a bad idea either.

Remember that you need to maneuver in three dimensions, so use all of the thrusters.

Well, Independence War 1 and 2 do have their share of problems WRT mission design. The learning curve is incredibly steep, and to make the first real mission so hard was an unfortunate design desision. However, I beat this mission many times, and after a while, you find the best way to approach it.

Some tips you already got, but the most important tip is (IMHO): don't lose faith! If you are stuck with a mission, put the game away and try again one or two days later. Just remember that it's worth it. The story is really nice and well told, and it's not you average stuff too.

Also, this is a Newtonian flight simulator, not a "warplanes in space" type of thing (like XYZ-Wing). Meaning, you have inertia that pulls/drags you, and you have to compensate for that. Once you get the hang of it, you can "dance" around enemy ships and use inertia to your advantage. Just be aware that if you come to love realistic space game physics, you'll never be happy again with the X-Wing/Freespace kind of games.
Also, most of the enemy ships are Tugs (not much firepower) and Patcoms (only have an upper side shield) so try to attack the latter from underneath.
Thanks for the replies.

I have stopped playing for a while, but as I'm receiving soom my Warthog HOTAS, I will go back on it !

Nice!

Have fun with that.
I initially found this mission to be insanely difficult as I had trouble damaging the enemy ships at all. There is however a problem with modern machines and the hit detection in this game (the game runs at too high a frame rate for it to work properly) Hence you see your shots land, but the enemy ships don't get damaged.

In the end I used MSI Afterburner to restrict the framerate to 30fps and lo and behold the game is now playable.

Note that your PBCs will still struggle to damage the enemy if they overheat, but this is an intentional part of the game.

Not made for the gamer who wants some fun in their spare time.

Made for the gamer who never leaves his PC but to restock his fridge with Red Bull and microwave with noodles.
Lol, it only took me a few tries. You don't have to be an anorak to complete the Gatekeeper mission...

What is an "anorak" in British English? In German, it just means a parka, a type of jacket.

Watch "The Big Bang Theory". Check out Sheldon. That's an "anorak". I really really thought you of all people would have known this 7Up!

Not only I'm from Germany, but I also have not watched even one ep of BBT. Just not my kind of humor. So what you mean is essentially an autistic person?
