I'm getting wrong music tracks being played at times. Is this an issue with the GOG version?
For example, in the main map screen sometimes I get battle music. And after winning a battle the defeat music plays after the victory music. What's going on?

Also, I don't know if this is related, but the intro movie isn't playing.

Edit: Forgot to mention, it's Imperialism 2

Sorry but my crystal ball is in repair.

Which Imp are we talking about?
Sorry, I forgot to mention it's Imp 2.

Oddly, I installed the disc version and the intro played normally, only the music didn't.

I tried on Win 7 and Win 10 64 bit, by the way.

I just tried a little bit on W8.1 no problem at all.

Win 10 is a disaster :P

Win 7 shall work. Default install? Better do it into a non Program files folder!

I always install games in (i.e.) D:\gog\ImperialismII

What about DirectX 9.0c? installed not installed?

EDIT: I do get the intro with the GOG version

I tried everything you suggested, but no luck...
It must be something installed in my system that's messing up, but I have no idea why.

I have 3 Windows installations in my PC: Win 7 on a hard drive, Win 7 on an SSD and Win 10 on another SSD. On both SSDs I had the same issue with the intro and music. But I booted into the Win 7 on the HDD, installed the game there and guess what? Everything played perfectly.

On my GF's laptop (Win 10) the intro works but the music doesn't play at all. Weird...

Did you install the game on the SSD?

Never tried it, I DO have my W8.1 on SSD as well, but the games are on a standard HDD though. It could be that the SSD drivers do screw something up. Later on I will try it as well and let you know).

I just had a quick look onto my SSD and HDD they look rather identical (device manager -> disk drives -> right click properties -> tab details)

That Win10 does create problems is nothing new (Imp, Jagged alliance just to name a few), especially after the last Win10 update.

Well, I did a clean install of Win 7, installed the game on the SSD and everything's working. I'll keep it this way for now...

It doesn't seem to be related to the SSD or Win 10, though (it happened on Win 7 before reinstalling)...

hmmm...could be really anything, windows update which didn't work, a installed/removed software/whatever.

You gonna have to love windows. It's a feature not a bug ;)
