I have never managed to win a single game in Imperialism 2 because there are subtleties that I have never been able to understand.

1- The Alliances:

I do not see any interest in creating one or more alliances, even if an enemy country declares war on me, none of my so-called allies will defend me, and that I have seen in almost all my parts.

2- Trade with minor nations

I have never understood what is the use of offering them cheaper prices (that is, the%), since each great power ends up winning in the price war, even if I offer them a percentage of 50% (or more), a message tells me they are no longer infuenced by my pricing policy.

So what's the point ?

And what interest to offer them a treaty of non-aggression since later on the end of the game these same nations will eventually be conquered by the IA.

thedkm: 1- The Alliances
All your foreign policy decisions depend on how powerful you are militarily. If you're too weak to defend yourself against an enemy that declares war on you, your allies will often act in their own self-interest and not support you.

Trade with minor nations
The only real point is to build relations with them for the long term, which is necessary to have access to their resources.

Yes, dealing with natives and minors can be tricky. It's no good to invest a lot of money and time into building relations if some other power is going to come along and conquer them.

You need to decide how you're going to deal with them early on and stick to your plan. Eventually you'll have to be able to defend them from other powers if you want to keep them as clients, or assimilate them. It's best to pick only one or two and focus on them, since you'll never be able to defend them all.

My tip is this: access to fur is the key to winning. If you can get a lot of fur, you can promote your workers to Master status, and no one else will be able to do that. It's even possible to skip the other two levels of and get by with only a few Masters, as long as you have enough resources to promote your workers.

Thanks you for your answers. :)
yup fur rules! especially the free stuff from industrialization, so look out for provinces with 2 or more.

I always try to grab those as soon as I find them. The AI seems to value them at a lower priority in the early game too, so they don't usually provoke wars the way diamond and emerald provinces do.
