Hi All

1946 has been my go to flight sim for years and I seldom go for long without it re appearing on my hard drive.

It's time to don the flight suit again, but last time around I had to mess about to get it installed and running properly and as I'm not technical this has rather put me off having another go. But now I see it on GOG and as I assume they've worked their magic leaving it optimized for modern machines, I'm inclined to buy it again.

I "can" run it on XP, but Ideally I'd like to run it on my Win 7 machine, where I can also benefit from using a hotas and a track ir system. But I notice on the forums that despite Win 7 being listed in the GOG blurb as supported, there are people having problems installing to this OS? Are most people alright and it's only a few having issues?

Also (to be cheeky) I notice it's also available on Steam and at the moment it's on sale for only a couple of quid! Is there any benefit from buying one version over the other in your opinion? (I've found in the past that where optimization is required, GOG is generally the way to go.)

Oh and also, I generally install player built missions from places like "mission 4 today". Is this still ok with the GOG version?

Many thanks for any advice

Hi and welcome,

I'm running this game on Windows 7 x64 without issues so I don't really know why other people are having problems with it. The only thing you need to be aware of with Windows 7 (or Vista and higher) is that you musn't install older software in %:\Program Files%\ because then you will get into trouble as Windows doesn't allow for changes in that folder.
Thankyou for the quick reply Strijkbout.
Taken the plunge and rebought the game again. :)

I've been out of the cockpit for a long time and I'm really looking forward to getting back into the swing of it. (Or at least as much into the swing of it as I ever managed.) As previously mentioned though I'm not very technical and I wonder can somebody point me at the best thread for talking me through the best order of update including which supermod etc. Lat time I flew this sim nothing like this existed. :)

For that I think it's best to ask or search around the mission4today forurms, I myself am playing this game vanilla at the moment.
The big mods as far as I know of are HSFW, Ultrapack and Dark Blue World, but I don't know if they have kept up with the latest updates of the base game.
Thanks again for the advice.
This thread on GOG helped me a lot:

Also, check one of the stickied threads for the downgrade patch so that youll be compatible with the mods. I'm not sure if the first thread I linked has linked that same thread or file.

Hi lebowitz

Thanks for the input, sorry to take so long to reply.

I'll keep a note of that link for future reference, possibly even for a third parallel installation. (my current plan is just to have the two. One vanilla and one modded.) But right now that page long procedure feels a little daunting for the likes of me. Though I am highly curious as to what those joint mods will bring to the party and look forward to finding out when I'm a little braver. :)

Meanwhile, someone has told me that HSFW is installable in one easy hit and an added patch. So I'm just waiting for him to throw a link at me for that.
