just wondering which does more damage a 2D4 or a 1D8 +1?
im thinking the higher initial number would cause the more damage but that would mean a basic sword bought in easthaven is stronger than a magic sword found in the vale of shadows.

Since the game is based on D&D rules, the 'd' refers to 'die' (or dice); the first number is how many dice; the second number is how many sides on the die.

So 2d4 means 2-four sided dice, which generates 2 to 8 points of damage. 1d8+1 means 1-eight sided die and you add one for a total of 2 to 9 points of damage.

Keep in mind that some creatures cannot be hurt by non-magical weapons, so even if a magic sword potentially would do less damage, it may be the only thing that will actually deal any damage to certain creatures.
thanks for that, i think i understand now.
so for example a 1D10+1 would give 2-11 damage?
ive got a crap party this time round with not much wieght allowance so cant afford to carry extras.
That's correct. Keep in mind, though, that this is not the actual damage that's done, as other bonuses (blessings, skills, str bonus, etc) will be applied on top of the base weapon damage. Also, as Coelocanth touched on, the level of enchantment of a weapon affects more than just the extra bit of damage it adds. Many monsters, particularly later in the game, have damage resistance that will negate most (or often all) of the damage of a weapon unless the weapon has a certain level of enchantment (e.g. +1, +2, +3, etc). Generally you want to try to make sure your melee characters are using weapons with as high a level of enchantment as you can get to ensure you don't run into a situation where you can't even scratch a tough enemy. Some weapons will also come with elemental damage, which will usually be along the lines of, say, +1D6 fire damage, which can be nice to have as in addition to the extra damage elemental damage is subject to different resistances than straight up physical damage types (for instance, skeletons have resistance to piercing and slashing damage, so a warrior with a sword will have a tough time doing much damage to them, but if that sword has some bonus fire damage that damage won't be reduced at all, since skeletons have no resistance to fire).
thanks also darrk phoenix, i understand the advantages of extra elemental damage/resistance, especially with my 2 fighters.
i think ive been lucky in past play thro's that my party could carry wieght & take a chance with weapons but this time ive got 3 that can only carry 70, 1 at 120, 1 at 170 & 1 at 320. it's my 170 weight allowance that is proficient with great & large swords so dont want to be carrying more than 2 or 3 blades for him to switch thro.
also my hit points have been hellish this time round, ive had to cheat & tick the max HP box in the config, therefor cant afford to not to have the most effective weapon in hand.
